The best time to ride a motorcycle in Alaska

The best time to ride a motorcycle in Alaska is June through August, with late May and early September as the edges of a short season. June brings the longest days of the year, July the warmest weather and the biggest crowds, and late August the first fall color on the tundra. Outside that window, snow, cold and breakup take over.

The short version

Alaska's riding season is short, bright and worth planning a year for

Most of Alaska's paved roads are rideable from about late May to early September. Before that, breakup leaves roads covered in winter sand, potholes and fresh frost heaves. After that, the first snow comes to the passes and the Interior, and the days shorten fast.

What you lose in months, you make up in daylight. Around the June solstice, Anchorage gets more than 19 hours of daylight and Fairbanks close to 22, and north of the Arctic Circle on the Dalton the sun doesn't set at all for a stretch of summer. A ride that would take two days somewhere else can fit into one, if you manage the fatigue.

Late May and June

Late May and June: long days, cold mornings

The season usually starts in late May, once the roads dry out and crews sweep up winter sand. Expect cold mornings, snow still on the mountains and fresh frost heaves that weren't there last fall. Many riders treat late May as warm-up season close to home.

June is a favorite month. The days are close to endless, traffic hasn't peaked, and the Interior is often dry and warm. Road construction ramps up, so expect pilot cars and fresh gravel on the main highways. Mosquitoes arrive in force, which matters every time you stop.

July and August

July and August: peak season

July is usually the warmest month and the busiest. RVs, tour buses and fishing traffic fill the Seward, Sterling and Parks highways, especially on weekends and around salmon runs on the Kenai. Interior wildfire season can bring smoke and the occasional road closure around Fairbanks and Tok.

August is still prime, with fewer crowds as the month goes on. Southcentral tends to get wetter in late summer, so bring real rain gear. By late August, the tundra along the Denali Highway and in the Interior starts turning red and gold, and the nights get dark again for the first time since spring.

September

September: the last call

Early September can be beautiful, with fall color at its peak in the Interior and empty roads after the tourist season winds down. It can also be cold, wet and snowy on the passes. Thompson Pass, Atigun Pass on the Dalton and the Denali Highway can see snow any time now.

By mid to late September most riders are done for the year. If you're riding up the Alaska Highway from the Lower 48, plan to be heading south by early September at the latest.
