The short version

Louisiana's riding year

Louisiana rides year-round, but not comfortably year-round. From June through September, heat and humidity make midday rides hard work, afternoon storms flood low roads, and the coast sits in hurricane season. From October through May, most days are good riding days, with only short cold snaps.

North Louisiana, around Shreveport, Monroe and Natchitoches, is a little cooler in winter and a little drier. South Louisiana, from Lake Charles through Lafayette to New Orleans, is the most humid and the most exposed to tropical storms. The best motorcycle roads in Louisiana lists the best season for each road, and the Louisiana motorcycle rides hub has the overview.

October and November

Fall: the best riding in Louisiana

October and November are the months Louisiana riders wait for. The first real cold front usually breaks the humidity sometime in October, the tropics quiet down, and the marsh roads, River Road and the Kisatchie hills are all comfortable at midday again.

Expect crowds on fall Saturdays around Baton Rouge during college football season, and on Sundays in October at Angola, where the prison rodeo pulls big traffic onto LA 66. Hurricane season officially runs to November 30, so keep an eye on the Gulf through October.

December to February

Winter: mild days, foggy mornings, Carnival

Winter in Louisiana is mild, and many days are good for riding. Cold fronts bring a few chilly days at a time, and the occasional freeze is rare and short. The bigger hazard is fog: dense fog settles over swamps, rivers and long bridges on cool, calm mornings. Wait for it to lift before you ride the Causeway, Manchac or the Atchafalaya.

Carnival season runs from early January to Mardi Gras day in February or early March. Parades close streets in New Orleans, Lafayette, Baton Rouge and towns across south Louisiana, and traffic is heavy for weeks. Plan rides away from parade routes.

March to May

Spring: crawfish, festivals and storms

March and April are the second great window. Days are warm but not yet oppressive, crawfish season is in full swing, and every ride through Acadiana can end at a boil. April brings big festivals: Festival International de Louisiane in Lafayette and, in New Orleans, the French Quarter Festival and Jazz Fest, which runs into early May. See Louisiana motorcycle events for more.

Spring storms can be strong, with heavy rain, hail and the occasional tornado. By May, humidity is back and lovebugs swarm the highways. Clean them off your visor and paint quickly.

June to September

Summer heat and hurricane season

Louisiana summers pair heat with heavy, sticky air, and storms pop up nearly every afternoon. Ride at first light, be off the road by early afternoon, wear vented gear and drink water at every stop. A downpour on flat ground pools fast, so slow down and watch for hydroplaning.

Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, with the busiest stretch usually August through early October. Southwest Louisiana and the coast have been hit hard in recent years, including Hurricane Laura in 2020 and Ida in 2021. For any coast trip, keep a backup date, watch the National Hurricane Center, and never ride into an evacuation. After a storm, expect flooding, debris and closed roads for days.
