The short version

A short season, worth planning

Minnesota riders get roughly five good months, and fewer up north. The south and the Twin Cities warm up first. The Arrowhead and the North Shore lag behind, and Lake Superior keeps the shore cool long after inland roads warm up. A warm afternoon a few miles inland can be cool and foggy right on the water, so the shore often feels a month behind.

That's why the North Shore and the Gunflint Trail are summer and early fall trips, while bluff country and the St. Croix work from May into October. Our guide to the best motorcycle roads in Minnesota lists the best season for each road.

Spring

Spring: sand, frost heaves and construction

Minnesota winters are hard on roads. The first rides of spring meet sand and salt in the corners, frost heaves that kick the bike, and potholes that can bend a rim. Take the first few weeks easy, especially on rural county roads, and wash the salt off the bike afterward.

Spring is also when construction season starts, and in Minnesota it runs all summer. Expect lane shifts, grooved pavement and gravel on the main routes. Up north, the fishing opener in mid May puts a lot of boat trailers on the roads to lake country, and snow can still fall in the Arrowhead into May.

Summer

Summer: North Shore season

June through August is when Minnesota rides hardest. The North Shore, the Gunflint Trail, MN 1 and lake country are all open, days are long, and the bluffs are green. Summer weekends bring cabin traffic north on Fridays and south on Sundays, so plan around it.

Lake Superior sets its own forecast: a hot inland day can turn into cold fog at the shore, so pack a layer and a clear visor. Inland, mosquitoes and biting flies are part of early summer in the woods, and hot afternoons can build thunderstorms anywhere in the state.

Fall color

Fall color: north first, then south

The Arrowhead turns first, usually in mid to late September, which makes the North Shore, the Gunflint Trail and MN 1 the place to be then. It moves south into the Twin Cities and the bluffs in early to mid October. Follow it and you get about three or four weeks of color.

Fall is short. Nights get cold fast up north, frost can coat shaded corners in the morning, and snow is possible by mid October. Deer are more active through fall, and firearm deer season opens in early November, which is about when most riders call it a year.

A good fall plan: ride the North Shore and the Gunflint Trail in the second half of September, then switch to the St. Croix, the Whitewater Valley and US 61 along Lake Pepin in early October as the color moves south.
