The short version

Mississippi's riding year

Mississippi rides most of the year, but heat and humidity set the rhythm. From June through September, the heat index often passes 100 and afternoon storms build fast. The rest of the year is comfortable on most days, with real cold only in short snaps, mostly in the north.

The state is long, and the regions differ. North Mississippi and the Tishomingo hills get the most winter cold and the best fall color. The Delta is open, windy and hot in summer. The Gulf coast stays mild in winter and sits in the path of hurricanes in late summer. The best motorcycle roads in Mississippi lists the best season for each road, and the Mississippi motorcycle rides hub has the overview.

March to May

Spring: the Trace in bloom

Spring is the Natchez Trace's best season. Dogwoods and redbuds bloom along the parkway from late March into April, the woods turn green, and the heat hasn't arrived. Natchez opens its historic homes for tours during its spring pilgrimage, and Clarksdale's Juke Joint Festival fills the Delta with live blues in April.

Spring is also severe weather season. Strong storms and tornadoes are most common from March into May, and heavy rain can drop limbs across the Trace. Check the forecast before long rides, know where you could take shelter along your route, and don't try to outrun a storm line.

June to August

Summer: heat, humidity and dawn starts

Mississippi summers are among the most humid in the country. Ride at first light, be off the road by early afternoon, wear vented gear and drink water at every stop. The shaded stretches of the Trace are more comfortable than the open Delta, where there's no shade at all and crosswinds blow hot.

Afternoon thunderstorms build quickly in summer. The first minutes of rain lift oil off the pavement, so ease off until it washes clear. Watch for armadillos on the road at night in the southern half of the state.

September to November

Fall: the second prime season

Late September brings the first relief, and October and November are excellent statewide. Color comes to the northeast hills and the Tishomingo stretch of the Trace from mid-October into November. The air is drier and the evenings cool.

Plan around a few crowds. Cruisin' the Coast, a big classic car week in early October, fills US 90 on the Gulf. College football Saturdays pack Oxford and Starkville. Natchez holds a fall pilgrimage too, and harvest season brings slow farm equipment onto Delta highways. See Mississippi motorcycle events for the calendar.

December to February

Winter: mild most days

Winter in Mississippi is mild by most standards, and many days are fine for riding. North Mississippi gets short cold snaps and the occasional ice storm, which can close roads for a day or two. On the coast, winter is quiet and comfortable, and Mardi Gras parades in Biloxi and other coast towns close streets in the weeks before Lent.

Storms

Tornadoes, hurricanes and riding

Mississippi has a main tornado season in spring and a second round of severe weather in late fall. On a stormy day, keep weather alerts on, plan stops where you could shelter, and park the bike when a warning is issued.

Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, with the busiest stretch usually August to October. For any Gulf coast trip in that window, keep a backup date and watch the National Hurricane Center. After a storm, expect debris, sand on US 90 and fallen trees across inland roads, including the Trace.
