The short version

Montana's riding season is short, so plan it

Montana gets real winters. Snow sits on the high passes from fall into late spring, and the two most famous roads, Going-to-the-Sun and the Beartooth, are closed for most of the year. That leaves a window of roughly four months when everything is open. The Montana state guide covers the regions. This page is about timing.

Inside that window, each month has a personality. June is green and wet with snowbanks up high. July and August are the most dependable, and the busiest. September is the local favorite. Plan the big trip for July or early September and you'll rarely be disappointed.

Summer

Summer: storms, smoke and construction

Summer afternoons often bring thunderstorms over the mountains, with lightning, hail and sudden cold rain. Ride the high roads in the morning and pack rain gear every day.

Late July through September is wildfire season. Smoke can fill whole valleys for days, and fires can close roads and parts of the parks. Check fire and air-quality information before a long trip, and have a backup route.

Road work gets crammed into the same few warm months you want to ride. Plan for flagger stops, pilot-car convoys and new chip seal: fresh tar under a layer of loose stone that needs a light touch. Slow down on new chip seal and leave space behind other vehicles. The roads themselves are in the best motorcycle roads in Montana.

Shoulder seasons

May, September and October

May is a gamble. Valley roads can be lovely, and the Beartooth usually opens late in the month, but spring storms can drop snow on any pass. Roads carry winter sand into June.

September is many Montana riders' favorite month. The park crowds thin after Labor Day, the air is clear once the smoke clears, and the larches and aspens start to turn late in the month. Nights get cold, and the first snow can dust the high roads.

October brings fall hunting season, more trucks and trailers on back roads, and deer and elk moving more in the fall rut. Be extra careful at dawn and dusk. The Beartooth usually closes around mid-month.

FAQ

Questions riders ask.

What is the best month to ride a motorcycle in Montana?

July is the most reliable, with every road open. Early September is the local favorite: quieter, crisp and still open, though nights get cold.

When does Going-to-the-Sun Road open?

It usually opens fully in late June or July, after a long spring of plowing. Lower sections open earlier. Check Glacier's site, including any vehicle reservation rules.

Can you ride a motorcycle in Montana in May?

Yes, in the valleys on good days, and the Beartooth usually opens late in the month. Spring storms can still bring snow to the passes, so check before you go.

When is wildfire smoke season in Montana?

Usually late July through September. Some years are clear, others bring days of smoke and road closures. Check fire and air-quality info before a trip.

When does the Beartooth Highway close?

Typically around mid-October, weather permitting. An early storm can close it sooner.

Is October a good time to ride in Montana?

Early October can be beautiful, but it's cold, the Beartooth usually closes mid-month, and hunting season brings more wildlife movement and traffic on back roads.
