The short version

New Hampshire's two riding seasons: south and north

New Hampshire is a short state from south to north, but the riding season changes a lot along the way. Around Nashua, Manchester, Concord and the Seacoast, riders are out by April on dry days and can ride into early November. The White Mountains and the North Country are a different climate: snow can hang on into May, mountain roads open later, and cold returns by mid-October.

That gives the year a natural shape. Ride close to home in spring, head for the mountains once they open in late May and June, spend the summer in the notches and the North Country, and chase the color from north to south in fall. Our guide to the best motorcycle roads in New Hampshire lists the best season for each road.

March to May

Spring: mud, frost heaves and black flies

Spring in New Hampshire starts as mud season. As the ground thaws in March and April, dirt roads turn soft, paved roads are covered in winter sand, and frost heaves and potholes appear overnight. The first rides are in the south on dry, swept roads, and the smart move is to treat every corner as sandy until proven otherwise.

The mountains open in stages through May. Snow can still fall at elevation, gated roads like Evans Notch and Bear Notch Road open once the snow is gone, and the Auto Road opens for the season when conditions allow. Late May into June is black fly season in the woods, which matters every time you stop. Keep the visor down and pack repellent.

June

June: Laconia Motorcycle Week and the start of mountain season

June is rally month. Laconia Motorcycle Week usually runs in mid-June around Weirs Beach on Lake Winnipesaukee, and it brings riders from all over the country. That means full hotels, heavy traffic around the lake and a lot of police on every road in the Lakes Region. Book early, ride the lake loop early in the morning, and use the week to explore the mountains an hour north. See New Hampshire motorcycle events for more.

June also has the longest days of the year, green mountains and comfortable temperatures. If you can take a weekday in June outside rally week, it's one of the best times to ride the Kancamagus and the notches without foliage crowds.

July and August

Summer: warm valleys, cold summits

July and August are the most reliable months in the mountains. Days are warm in the valleys, every road is open, and evenings are cool. Thunderstorms build over the White Mountains on many afternoons, so start early and plan to be off the high roads by mid-afternoon when storms are forecast.

Mount Washington plays by its own rules. The summit can be foggy, windy and near freezing on a summer day when the base is warm, so check the forecast and pack real layers before the Auto Road. Down south, the Seacoast and Hampton Beach are at peak traffic, and the Lakes Region is busy every weekend.

Late September to October

Foliage: the best riding and the worst traffic

Color usually peaks in the White Mountains and the North Country from late September into early October, then moves south through the Lakes Region and the Monadnock area into mid October. The Kancamagus becomes one of the busiest roads in New England on foliage weekends, with tour buses and cars stopping at every overlook.

Ride at sunrise, ride midweek, or pick the quieter roads, like NH 118, Kinsman Notch or the North Country, instead of the Kanc. Mornings are cold, frost can coat shaded corners, and snow can dust the summits by October. Days get short fast, so plan to be off the mountain roads before dark, when moose are hardest to see.
