The short version

New Jersey's riding season, in short

New Jersey has three riding zones. The Skylands in the northwest are higher, colder and snowier, with the best fall color. The central corridor between New York and Philadelphia is dense and busy, so traffic matters more than weather. The coastal plain, from the Pine Barrens to the shore, has milder winters and summer crowds near the beach.

Most riders ride from April into November and grab dry winter days. The New Jersey riding overview covers the regions, and the best motorcycle roads in New Jersey lists the classics in each one.

The northwest

The Skylands: May to October

Sussex, Warren and northern Morris and Passaic counties run cooler than the rest of the state, with more snow and a ski area in Vernon. Cold mornings and sand in the corners hang on into April, and May is usually when the Skylands season really opens.

October is the month here. Color usually comes first around High Point and the Kittatinny Ridge, then spreads south and east. The Delaware Water Gap, Old Mine Road and the lake towns get busy on fall weekends, and deer are on the move at dawn and dusk. Shaded, north-facing curves can hold frost on late-season mornings.

The coast

The shore: September is the secret

Between Memorial Day and Labor Day, shore traffic owns the Garden State Parkway and the roads to the beach, worst heading south on Friday afternoons and north on Sunday evenings. Beach towns are slow going, and parking fills early. If you ride the shore in summer, go early on a weekday.

After Labor Day, the shore turns into one of the best rides in the state. The ocean keeps the air warm into September, the crowds thin out, and Ocean Drive and Sandy Hook become pleasant again. Summer brings biting greenhead flies near the marshes. Tropical storms are possible from June through November, and they, along with fall and winter nor'easters, can put water over low shore roads and close the bridges to the barrier islands.

The Pines

The Pine Barrens: spring and fall, with an eye on fire

The Pine Barrens ride best in spring and fall. Summer days are hot and buggy on the sandy, shadeless roads, and services are far apart. Fall is quietly beautiful, with red blueberry fields and cedar swamps along CR 563 and CR 542.

Spring, before the trees leaf out, is the main wildfire season in the Pinelands, and fires can close roads like NJ 72 and the county roads through the forest. Check conditions on dry, windy days before you head into the Pines.
