The best time to ride a motorcycle in Virginia
The best time to ride a motorcycle in Virginia is April through June and September through early November. October is the headline month on the Blue Ridge: color peaks along Skyline Drive and the parkway, and so do the crowds. Summers are hot and humid east of the mountains, winter closes the high roads in bad weather, and the coast watches hurricane season. Here is the year month by month.

The short version
Virginia's riding season, region by region
Virginia runs from sea level at Virginia Beach to Mount Rogers, the state's highest point at 5,729 feet, and its riding climate follows. The Blue Ridge and the southwest highlands are cooler, foggier and snowier. The Piedmont and Northern Virginia are hot in summer and mild in much of the winter. Tidewater and the coast are mildest of all, but sit in the path of Atlantic storms.
That makes Virginia a two-zone state for most of the year. Ride the ridges from spring through fall and the lowlands on mild winter days, and you'll ride most months.

Spring
Spring: maple syrup, redbuds and opening ridges
Spring starts early in Highland County, where the Highland Maple Festival in March is a classic first ride of the year, cold mornings and all. By April, redbuds and dogwoods bloom across the Piedmont, wildflowers fill Skyline Drive, and the parkway's higher sections open up as winter weather moves out.
May is one of the best months anywhere in the state: green ridges, mild days and lighter crowds than fall. Mornings on the crest can still be cold, so layer up, and expect spring storms to roll through in the afternoon.
Summer
Summer: hot lowlands, cool ridges
Richmond, Hampton Roads and Northern Virginia swelter through July and August. Ride at dawn, take shaded breaks and drink water at every stop. Beach traffic backs up at the bridge-tunnels around Hampton Roads on summer weekends.
The ridges are the escape, which is why Skyline Drive and the parkway stay busy all summer. Afternoon thunderstorms build over the mountains most hot days, and the Blue Ridge often sits inside a cloud in the morning. Ride early, slow down in fog, and don't sit out lightning at an exposed overlook.
Fall
Fall color on Skyline Drive and the parkway
October is the big month. Color on the Blue Ridge usually peaks in mid to late October, a little earlier at the highest points and a little later in the valleys, and it shifts every year with rain and temperature.
It's also when Skyline Drive and the parkway are at their busiest, with lines at the Shenandoah entrance stations and full overlooks on weekends. Go midweek if you can, start at first light, and use roads like US 211, VA 231 and the passes to the west when the crest is packed. The best motorcycle roads in Virginia guide lists them all.
Wet leaves pile up in shaded curves, and deer move more in fall. November mornings turn cold fast on the ridges.
Winter
Winter: closures up high, mild days down low
Skyline Drive closes sections during snow and ice, and parkway stretches close in winter weather too, sometimes for long periods. Check Shenandoah National Park and the parkway's road status before heading up. The southwest highlands around Mount Rogers and Burke's Garden see real snow.
The Piedmont, Tidewater and the coast get plenty of rideable winter days. A dry January afternoon on the Colonial Parkway or the back roads of the Northern Neck can be a good ride. Wear layers or heated gear and watch for salt and sand after storms.
Storms
Hurricane season on the coast
The Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, with the highest risk usually from mid-August into October. Tropical storms can flood low roads around Hampton Roads and the Eastern Shore and shut the bridge-tunnels to motorcycles in high wind. Helene in 2024 also flooded parts of southwest Virginia, far from the coast.
For a coast trip in that window, watch the forecast a week out, keep plans flexible, and check 511 Virginia the morning you leave.
