The big one

The Barber Vintage Festival

The Barber Vintage Festival is Alabama's signature motorcycle weekend. It takes over Barber Motorsports Park, just east of Birmingham near Leeds, for a long weekend every October. Expect vintage racing on the track, a huge swap meet where riders hunt for parts and old bikes, displays, demos and riders from all over the country.

Plan ahead. Rooms around Birmingham fill early that weekend, and I-20 near the park backs up. Ride in early, give yourself time for the swap meet, and check the organizer for this year's dates and tickets.

Year-round

The Barber museum and racing at Barber

Even without an event, Barber is worth the ride. The Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum sits beside the track and holds what's often called the largest motorcycle collection in the world, displayed over several floors. Give it at least half a day.

Barber also hosts racing through the year, and MotoAmerica superbike racing has held rounds there in recent seasons, usually in spring. Check the track's calendar for this year's schedule. Watch the racing at the track and keep it there. Rippin' never rewards speed on public roads.
