Overview
Why Florida motorcycle rides are worth the trip
Florida is flat, so the riding isn't about switchbacks. It's about water on both sides of the road, long causeways and tunnels of live oak and Spanish moss, in a season that lasts all year.
Think of the state in four parts. Northeast Florida and the Atlantic coast run from Amelia Island through St. Augustine to Ormond Beach and Daytona, the heart of Florida bike culture. Central Florida has the Ocala National Forest and the rolling hills near Clermont. South Florida has the Everglades and the Keys. The Panhandle and Big Bend feel like a different state, with Tallahassee canopy roads, the Forgotten Coast and the beach towns of 30A.
Roads
The best motorcycle roads in Florida
- A1A, Atlantic coastThe coast road runs the whole Atlantic side. The best stretch goes from Amelia Island through St. Augustine to Flagler Beach, with the St. Johns River Ferry at Mayport linking the banks. Watch for blowing sand on the pavement and beach traffic on weekends.
- Ormond Scenic Loop and TrailA loop north of Ormond Beach on Old Dixie Highway, Highbridge Road and A1A, under deep oak canopy along the Halifax River and Bulow Creek. The classic Daytona-area ride. Watch for no shoulders and heavy traffic during rally weeks.
- Overseas Highway (US 1)The road to Key West hops the Florida Keys on a chain of bridges, including the Seven Mile Bridge, with open water on both sides. Ride it slowly and stop often. Watch for strong crosswinds on the long bridges, heavy holiday traffic, and lower speed zones through the island towns.
- Tamiami Trail (US 41)Crosses the Everglades between Miami and Naples, past Big Cypress National Preserve. Flat, straight and wild. Watch for long gaps between fuel stops, wildlife on the shoulder, and summer storms with nowhere to shelter.
- SR 40, Ocala National ForestCrosses the forest east of Ocala past Juniper Springs, through sandy pine woods with long sweepers and light traffic. Watch for deer and black bears, especially at dawn and dusk.
- Old Florida Heritage HighwayA designated scenic highway on back roads south of Gainesville through Micanopy, Cross Creek and the edge of Paynes Prairie, with oak canopy, lakes and small towns that still look like old Florida. Watch for slow farm traffic and narrow two-lane pavement.
- Tallahassee canopy roadsLeon County protects a set of canopy roads, including Old St. Augustine Road, Centerville Road and Miccosukee Road, where live oaks close overhead for miles. Short, beautiful rides right out of town. Watch for no shoulders, wet patches and leaves hiding in the shade, and cyclists.
- Big Bend Scenic Byway and US 98US 98 follows the Gulf along the Forgotten Coast through Carrabelle and Apalachicola, and the Big Bend Scenic Byway loops inland through the Apalachicola National Forest. Fishing towns, oysters and empty marsh. Watch for strong Gulf winds on bridges and sparse fuel.
- Scenic Highway 30AA slow, pretty run through the beach towns of South Walton between two ends on US 98, past Seaside, WaterColor and Rosemary Beach and the coastal dune lakes. Ride it for the scenery, not the pace. Watch for heavy pedestrian, bicycle and golf cart traffic, especially in summer.
When to ride
When to ride in Florida
Florida's best riding runs from about November to April, which is why the big rallies land in March and October. North Florida and the Panhandle get real cold snaps in winter, so layer up for early starts.
Summer is hot and humid, and afternoon thunderstorms build almost daily from about June through September. Ride early, be off the road by mid afternoon, and remember lightning is the real danger, not the rain.
Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30, busiest usually from August through October. Keep a backup date for any Keys or coast trip, and expect sand and debris on coastal roads after a storm.
Lovebugs swarm in late spring and again in late summer. Wash them off visors and paint soon after the ride.
Laws
Florida motorcycle laws: helmets and lane splitting
Helmets. Florida requires helmets for some riders, mainly younger riders; the age and conditions are set in state law. Check the IIHS helmet law overview for the current rule, and wear a helmet anyway. It's the single best piece of gear you own.
Lane splitting and filtering. As of 2026, Florida law doesn't allow lane splitting or filtering. Several states are changing their laws, so check before you ride.
This is a summary, not legal advice. Laws change, so check the Florida statute or the state DMV before you ride.
Events
Florida motorcycle events and rallies
Florida has two of the best-known motorcycle rallies in the country. Daytona Bike Week takes over Daytona Beach every March, and Biketoberfest brings the crowd back every October. In the Panhandle, Thunder Beach runs in Panama City Beach in the spring and again in the fall. Check the organizer for dates each year, and book rooms early.
The Distinguished Gentleman's Ride also runs worldwide each May; look for a ride in a Florida city near you.
Between the big weekends, the real scene is bike nights and weekly meets at bars, dealers and cafes. In Rippin', open Meets to find bike nights, rallies, swap meets, charity rides and toy runs near you and RSVP. Riders and shops can post their own events, and repeating weekly or monthly meets always show the next date. More on motorcycle events in the app.

Tips
Florida riding tips
- Beat the afternoon stormsRide mornings in summer. The first minutes of rain lift oil off the pavement, and standing water hides potholes.
- Sand and saltCoastal roads collect sand at intersections, beach accesses and parking lot exits. Salt air is hard on chains and fasteners, so rinse the bike after a coast ride.
- Cashless tollsFlorida's Turnpike and many expressways around Orlando, Miami and Tampa are cashless. Carry a SunPass or a compatible transponder, or expect a toll bill by plate in the mail.
- Scan the shouldersAlligators sun near water, and deer, bears and armadillos cross rural roads at dawn and dusk.
- Respect the heatSummer heat index readings often top 100 degrees. Wear mesh gear, drink water at every stop, and watch for heat exhaustion during long sits in traffic.
Rippin' in Florida
A free motorcycle app for Florida riders
Rippin' started in Southern California, so Florida is early: few riders and rider-added roads so far, and a wide open map. Ride a loop that closes back on itself, like the Ormond Scenic Loop or a circuit of Tallahassee canopy roads, and the land inside becomes your turf on the live map with your name on it. Here's how Turf Wars works.
Poker runs happen at real stops like shops, cafes, bars and dealerships, and each one deals a card when you arrive. Run a shop on A1A or a bar in the Keys? Become a poker stop.
Riders add the roads with Create a Segment, and a person on our team checks each one; see how roads get added. Use group rides to keep the crew on one live map, and record every ride free with the ride tracker.
