The short version
Two Maines, two riding seasons
Maine's coast and its interior have different seasons. The ocean keeps the coast cooler in summer and a little milder at the edges of the season, so the southern coast from Kittery to Portland can ride on good days from late April into early November. The western mountains, Moosehead and the North Woods sit higher and farther north: snow can linger into May and return in October, and the window in between is shorter.
Inside that window, mid-June through early October is the sweet spot. Our guide to the best motorcycle roads in Maine lists the best season for each road, coast and inland.

April to June
Spring: mud, frost heaves and black flies
Maine's spring starts with mud season. As the frost comes out of the ground in April, dirt roads turn soft and rutted, paved roads are covered in winter sand, and frost heaves can be big enough to unsettle a bike. Some back roads are posted against heavy loads in spring, which tells you how soft they are. The first rides of the year are on the southern coast, on dry days, on roads you know.
May opens things up, but the mountains can still see snow, and nights stay cold. From mid-May into June, black flies swarm in the woods, which you'll notice every time you stop. Keep your visor down, wear long sleeves and pack repellent. Acadia's Park Loop Road reopens in spring, and the park gets busier through June.
July and August
Summer: cool coast, warm interior, heavy traffic on US 1
July and August are peak tourist season on the coast. US 1 slows to a crawl through towns like Wiscasset, Camden and Bar Harbor, Acadia fills up, and Cadillac Mountain has needed vehicle reservations in peak season. Ride early in the morning, use the peninsula roads to get off US 1, and check the National Park Service site before an Acadia day.
Fog is the coast's signature. It can roll in off the ocean on a sunny day and drop visibility to almost nothing in minutes, so slow down and use your lights. Inland, summer days are warm, nights are cool and afternoon thunderstorms build over the mountains. It's the most reliable time to ride the North Woods.
September and October
Fall: the best riding of the year
Once the summer crowd leaves after Labor Day, Maine riding gets very good. Color usually peaks in the north and the western mountains in late September, then moves south and down to the coast by mid October. The Height of Land, Grafton Notch and the Carrabassett Valley are at their best.
Fall has hazards of its own. Moose are on the move during their fall rut, roughly September and October, and they're hard to see at dusk. Hunting seasons bring more trucks to back roads. Mornings are cold, frost can sit in shaded corners, and days get short fast. Plan to be off the mountain roads before dark.

Plan for it
Plan around Maine's distances and daylight
- Fuel: Fill up in towns like Rangeley, Stratton, Jackman and Greenville, and never pass a station on a remote stretch.
- Daylight: Plan the last hour of a mountain ride before sunset. Moose are hardest to see at dusk and after dark.
- Cell service: It fades quickly north of the main towns, so share your plan with someone before you go.
- Private roads: Many North Woods roads are private logging roads, some gated with fees. Stick to public highways unless you know the rules.
- Weather: The coast can be foggy and cool while the interior is sunny and warm. Pack layers for both.
November to April
Storing your bike for a Maine winter
Maine winters are long. Most riders store the bike from November to April, when snow, ice and salt cover the roads.
- Fill the tank with stabilized fuel and run the engine so it circulates.
- Keep the battery on a tender, or store it indoors above freezing.
- Change the oil before storage.
- Wash off salt and road grime, dry the bike and use a breathable cover.
- Set tire pressure and block the exhaust against mice.
Rippin' keeps a maintenance log with service reminders in your garage, so you know what's due in spring.
