Riding Down East
Maine motorcycle rides: the rocky coast, Acadia and the western mountains
Maine motorcycle rides split into two worlds: the rocky coast, with US 1, lighthouses and the Park Loop Road in Acadia, and the big empty interior, with the Rangeley Lakes, Grafton Notch, Moosehead Lake and roads where you will see more moose than cars. Maine is nearly as big as the other five New England states combined, so plan on long days. Here are the roads, the season, the helmet law and how Rippin' works in Maine.

Why ride Maine
Why Maine is worth the trip
Maine is huge by New England standards, nearly as big as the other five states combined, and most of it is forest, lakes and mountains with very few people. That gives you two kinds of riding: the coast, which is beautiful and busy, and the interior, which is beautiful and empty.
The southern coast runs from Kittery through Ogunquit and Portland. Midcoast Maine has harbor towns like Camden and Rockland. Down East and Acadia have Mount Desert Island, the Park Loop Road and Cadillac Mountain. The western mountains around Rangeley, Bethel and Carrabassett Valley have the best curves in the state. The Moosehead Lake region and the North Woods are remote, with logging roads and moose. Aroostook County in the far north is open potato country near the Canadian border.
The roads
Best motorcycle roads in Maine
- US 1, the Maine coastRuns up the coast from Kittery through Portland, Wiscasset, Camden and Ellsworth, past harbors, lobster shacks and lighthouses. The famous route, and in summer the slow one. Wiscasset is a well-known bottleneck, so ride early.
- Park Loop Road, Acadia National ParkLoops around the east side of Mount Desert Island past Sand Beach, Thunder Hole and Otter Cliff. Ocean and granite views the whole way. Long stretches are one way, cars park in the right lane in places, and a park pass is required.
- Cadillac Summit Road, AcadiaClimbs to the top of Cadillac Mountain with a view over Bar Harbor and the islands. Vehicle reservations have been required in peak season, so check the National Park Service site before you go. Expect slow traffic and pedestrians at the top.
- Shore Road and ME 77, Cape ElizabethRuns south of Portland past Portland Head Light and along the shore through Cape Elizabeth. A short ride with some of the best lighthouse views on the coast. Tourist traffic and parked cars near the lights.
- ME 17, Height of LandRuns between Rumford and Oquossoc through the Rangeley Lakes region. The Height of Land overlook looks out over Mooselookmeguntic Lake and the mountains, one of the best views in New England. Frost heaves, logging trucks and people stopped at the overlook.
- ME 4, Farmington to RangeleyRuns up through the western mountains past Phillips into Rangeley. Long sweepers through forest and river valleys. Moose and logging trucks, and few gas stops.
- ME 26, Grafton NotchRuns from Newry near Sunday River north through Grafton Notch State Park toward Upton, past waterfalls and steep mountain walls. Quiet and twisty. Moose, especially at dusk.
- ME 27, Carrabassett ValleyRuns from Kingfield through Carrabassett Valley past Sugarloaf to Stratton and Eustis, and on to the Canadian border. Mountain views and big sweepers. Logging trucks and moose, and services thin out north of Stratton.
- US 201, Old Canada RoadA scenic byway along the Kennebec River from Solon through The Forks to Jackman. Big river and forest views. Long stretches without gas, logging trucks and moose.
- ME 6 and ME 15, Moosehead LakeRuns from Greenville up the shore of Moosehead Lake to Rockwood, deep into the North Woods. Huge lake views and very little traffic. Remote, so fuel up in Greenville.
When to ride
When is motorcycle season in Maine?
Most Maine riding happens from May to October. The southern coast can start in April and run into early November on good days, while the mountains and the North Woods are shorter, with snow possible early and late. Spring brings frost heaves, sand and black fly season in late spring, which matters every time you stop.
Summer is cool on the coast and warm inland, with fog that rolls in off the ocean fast. July and August are peak tourist season on US 1 and in Acadia, so expect slow traffic and plan early starts.
Fall foliage usually peaks in the north and the mountains in late September and moves down to the coast into mid October. It is the best time for the western mountain roads, but nights get cold quickly. Late summer and fall can bring the remnants of tropical storms up the coast.
Laws
Maine motorcycle laws: helmets and lane splitting
Helmets: Maine requires helmets for some riders, mainly younger riders; the age and conditions are set in state law. See the IIHS helmet law overview for the current rule. Whatever the law says for you, wear one. It is the cheapest insurance you will ever buy.
Lane splitting and filtering: As of 2026, Maine law doesn't allow lane splitting or filtering. Several states are changing their laws, so check before you ride.
This is a plain-English summary, not legal advice. Laws change, so check the Maine statutes or DMV before you ride.

- Fill up when you canGas stations are far apart in the western mountains and the North Woods, and small stores close early. Never pass up fuel past Rangeley, Stratton or Greenville.
- Fog on the coastCoastal fog can drop visibility in minutes, even on a sunny day. Use your lights and slow down on US 1.
- Tolls on the TurnpikeThe Maine Turnpike (I-95) is tolled. Carry E-ZPass or be ready to pay.
- Plan for black fliesLate spring brings black flies in the woods. Keep your visor down at stops and pack repellent.
Rippin' in Maine
The motorcycle app for Maine riders
Rippin' is a free motorcycle app for iPhone and Android. Tap Record Ride, ride the coast or the mountains, and get a Ride Wrapped recap with your map, miles, turf and points. See the free ride tracker.
Rippin' started in Southern California, and Maine has few riders and roads in the app so far. With this much open country, the map is almost entirely unclaimed. In Turf Wars, any loop that closes back on itself claims the land inside, and empty land is free. A Rangeley loop on ME 17, ME 4 and US 2 claims a big piece of the western mountains.
Lobster shacks, general stores and shops can become poker stops through the partners page; each stop deals a card when you arrive. Read how poker runs work. Add a favorite road through Create a Segment, and use road and weather alerts to flag hazards and check the sky before a long day.
