The short version

New Mexico is high desert, and it rides like it

New Mexico's riding calendar comes down to elevation and four distinct seasons. Las Cruces sits around 4,000 feet, Albuquerque around 5,000, Santa Fe and Taos around 7,000, and the mountain passes go past 9,000. The low south can be hot in June and mild in January. The north can be cool in July and buried in January. The New Mexico state guide covers the regions. This page is about timing.

Each season has one big thing to plan around: wind in spring, fire danger in early summer, monsoon storms in late summer, and snow up north in winter. Fall has the fewest problems, which is why it's most riders' favorite.

General patterns, not a forecast. Every year is different. Check the weather and NMRoads before you ride.

Spring

Spring: warm days and strong wind

From March into May, New Mexico gets some of the strongest sustained winds of the year, often peaking in April. On open highways like I-25, I-40, US 84 and US 64 across the plateau, gusts can push a bike across a lane. Blowing dust can drop visibility fast, especially in the southern basins.

When it's blowing, pick mountain and canyon roads where the terrain blocks the gusts, or ride at first light before it picks up. Spring is still a good season in the south and around Albuquerque, and the high roads up north start opening as the snow melts.

Summer

Summer: dry June, then the monsoon

June is usually hot and very dry, the peak of fire season. In dry years, national forests can restrict access or close areas, and a fire can close a road for days. Check forest and road status before a mountain trip.

The monsoon usually arrives in early July and runs into September. Mornings are often clear, then thunderstorms build over the mountains by early afternoon, with lightning, hail and heavy rain. Arroyos and dips in the road can flood fast, even if it isn't raining where you are. Ride early, and never ride through moving water.

Summer is still high-country season. When Las Cruces is over 100 degrees, Cloudcroft, Taos and Chama are cool. The roads to pick are in the best motorcycle roads in New Mexico.

Fall

Fall: the best riding of the year

September and October bring calmer air, fewer storms, cool mornings and warm afternoons. Aspens in the Sangre de Cristos, around the Enchanted Circle and in the Jemez usually turn from late September into early October. Chile roasting fills the air in towns around the state.

Fall also brings crowds to a few places. The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, usually in early October, fills hotels and roads around Albuquerque. Peak aspen weekends get busy around Taos and Red River. By late October, the first cold snaps hit the north, and snow can come in November.

Winter

Winter: ride the south

From December to February, the northern mountains are ski country. Taos, Red River, Angel Fire and Chama get snow, and high roads like US 64 over the Tusas Mountains, Cumbres Pass and Bobcat Pass can be snowy or closed.

The south is a different story. Las Cruces, Deming, Truth or Consequences and the Carlsbad area often have sunny, mild afternoons. Albuquerque has plenty of rideable days too, with cold mornings. Watch for ice in shaded corners and sand on the road after storms.
