Memorial Day
Planning a Red River rally weekend
Red River sits around 8,700 feet, and late May in the mountains can mean anything from warm sun to cold rain or even snow at Bobcat Pass. Pack real layers and rain gear. Book rooms early, since the town fills up, and expect slow traffic on NM 38 and around Eagle Nest and Angel Fire.
Make the weekend a ride. Come up the High Road from Santa Fe or the Low Road along the Rio Grande, lap the Enchanted Circle, and drop through Cimarron Canyon on the way out. Those roads are in the best motorcycle roads in New Mexico.
Every week
Find a New Mexico bike night, or post your own
Big events are a few weekends a year. Bike nights are every week, and they're how you find riders to ride with. Rippin' puts them on the same map as turf, segments and poker stops.
Shops, clubs and brands that host a lot can use Organizer Pro ($8.99/mo) for unlimited and recurring meets, official events on the calendar and recurring ride plans. A diner, cafe or shop can also become a poker stop. More on motorcycle events in Rippin'.

Crowds
Big non-moto weekends to plan around
These aren't motorcycle events, but they fill roads, towns and hotels. Dates change, so check before you go.
- Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, usually in early October: heavy traffic and full hotels around Albuquerque for more than a week.
- Hatch Chile Festival, usually over Labor Day weekend: a popular ride destination in the Rio Grande valley north of Las Cruces, and a busy one.
- Santa Fe Indian Market, usually in August: Santa Fe's plaza and hotels are packed.
- Peak aspen weekends, late September into early October: busy roads around Taos, Red River and the Jemez.
Before you go
Before you ride to a New Mexico event
Timing matters as much as the event. See the best time to ride in New Mexico for wind, monsoon and snow patterns.
- Confirm the date and entry with the organizer the week before. Plans change.
- Plan fuel. Rural routes have long gaps between stations.
- Check the road and weather on NMRoads and in the app the morning you leave.
- Pack for altitude. Mountain events can be cold, even in late spring.
- Ride home in daylight. Elk, deer and open-range cattle are hardest to see at dusk.
- Share a ride plan with your squad so everyone knows the departure time, route and stops.
