The short version
New York's riding season depends on how far north you go
New York stretches from the Atlantic beaches of Long Island to the Canadian border, with mountains in between. Downstate, from the five boroughs out to Montauk and up to Bear Mountain, is the mildest part of the state and rides longest. The Catskills and the Finger Lakes run a few weeks shorter on each end. The Adirondacks and the North Country are mountain country with a short summer, and the areas east of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario get some of the heaviest snow in the East.
So the best ride in May and the best ride in September are in different places. The New York riding overview covers the regions, and the best motorcycle roads in New York lists the classics in each one.

Downstate
Downstate: April into November, around the traffic
Downstate gets the most riding days. April and May are excellent before the humidity, and September and October are the best of all. Summer is hot and sticky, with afternoon thunderstorms, so start early and be off the road by mid afternoon.
Traffic matters as much as weather. Bridge and highway traffic out of the city builds early on summer weekends, and Long Island's East End fills on summer weekends and fall harvest weekends. Harriman and Bear Mountain get busy on any nice Sunday. Get out early and come back late.
The middle
The Catskills, Hudson Valley and Finger Lakes: late April to late October
These regions wake up in late April, when the last snow is gone but sand from winter treatment still sits at intersections and potholes are at their worst. By late May the riding is excellent, and June through August is prime, with afternoon storms in the mountains.
Fall color usually peaks in the Catskills in early to mid October and a little later in the Hudson Valley and the Finger Lakes. Leaf traffic on NY 23A, NY 28, the Taconic and the wine roads is real on October weekends, especially the Columbus Day holiday weekend. Ride weekdays or start at first light.
Up north
The Adirondacks: a short, sweet window
The Adirondacks open late and close early. Plan on late May through early October, and don't be surprised by snow at either edge of that window. Black flies are out in late spring and early summer, which mostly matters when you stop. July and August are prime, with cool mornings and comfortable afternoons.
Color usually peaks from late September into early October, earlier at elevation. That is also when the region is busiest, and by mid October it is cold and closing up. The Whiteface Memorial Highway opens and closes with the season, so check its hours before you ride up. Services are sparse everywhere, and deer and the occasional moose are a real hazard at dusk.
Off-season
Lake effect snow, salt and spring potholes
- Lake effect snow: Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse and especially the Tug Hill Plateau east of Lake Ontario get heavy snow, so winter comes early and spring comes late near the lakes.
- Salt: Roads statewide get salted all winter. Rinse the bike after any winter ride.
- Sand and grit: Winter sand sits at intersections and in corners well into spring.
- Potholes: The freeze and thaw opens them from late winter into spring, downstate and up.
- Black ice: Bridges, shaded curves and mountain roads freeze first and thaw last.
- Tolls: The Thruway and many bridges use cashless tolling, so carry a transponder or expect a bill by mail.
