The best time to ride a motorcycle in North Carolina is May through June and September through October. In the mountains, spring brings blooming rhododendron, and fall color starts on the highest ridges in late September and reaches the valleys by late October. The short version

North Carolina has three riding climates

North Carolina runs from sea level on the Outer Banks to 6,684 feet on Mount Mitchell, the highest peak east of the Mississippi. That spread gives the state three riding climates. The mountains in the west have the best roads and the shortest season. The Piedmont around Charlotte, the Triad and the Triangle is hot in summer and mild most of the winter. The coast is milder still, but sits in the path of Atlantic hurricanes.

So pick the region to fit the month. A cold January day that gates the parkway can still be a fine ride in the Sandhills or along the coast, and a sticky August afternoon in Charlotte can be jacket weather on the ridges above Asheville.

Spring

Spring in the mountains: April to June

Spring climbs the mountains the way fall comes down them. Trees leaf out in the valleys in April and reach the ridgetops weeks later. Waterfalls along US 276, US 64 and NC 215 run their fullest, and parkway sections that close for winter reopen as the weather allows.

May and June are the sweet spot. Flame azalea and mountain laurel bloom through late spring, and the rhododendron on Roan Mountain and the high balds usually peaks in June. Crowds are lighter than in fall, though Memorial Day weekend is busy. April mornings on the ridges can be cold even when the Piedmont is warm, so pack layers.

In the Piedmont, April is beautiful and yellow: pine pollen coats everything, including your visor. Carry a cloth.

Summer

Summer: cool ridges, hot lowlands

July and August are hot and humid in Charlotte, Raleigh and down east. Ride early, carry water and take long breaks in the shade.

The mountains are the escape, and the reason so many Piedmont riders head west on summer weekends. The parkway above Asheville and the Cherohala Skyway can be far cooler than the valleys. The tradeoff is afternoon thunderstorms, which build on most summer days in the high country. Ride the ridges in the morning, and don't sit out lightning at an exposed overlook.

Clouds settle on the Blue Ridge in every season, most often in the morning. When the parkway disappears into one, slow down, wear high-visibility gear and wait it out at a pull-off if you need to.

Fall

Fall color and crowds on the Blue Ridge

For most riders, fall is the reason to come, as long as you can handle company. Color usually starts on the highest ridges, above about 5,000 feet, in late September and early October, peaks at the middle elevations in mid-October, and reaches the lower valleys and foothills in late October and early November. A wet or dry summer shifts it every year.

Expect October weekends to jam the parkway, Blowing Rock, Boone, Asheville and the Grandfather Mountain overlooks. Go midweek if you can, start early, and use back roads like NC 209, NC 215 and Wayah Road when the parkway is packed. The best motorcycle roads in North Carolina guide has the full list.

Leaves on the pavement are slick, especially wet ones in shaded corners. Deer move more in fall, and mornings turn cold fast in November.

Winter

Winter: parkway closures and mild-day rides

Winter shuts the high country in pieces. Sections of the Blue Ridge Parkway close to traffic in snow and ice, and some high stretches stay gated for long periods. Shaded corners on state roads can hold ice for days after a storm. Check the Blue Ridge Parkway status and DriveNC the morning you go.

The Piedmont and coast get plenty of rideable winter days between cold fronts. A dry, sunny January afternoon can be a good ride around Lake Norman, through the Uwharrie National Forest or across the Sandhills. Layer up or wear heated gear, and watch for salt and sand after storms.

Storms

Hurricane season and the coast

The Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, with the highest risk usually from mid-August into October. Storms can close NC 12 with overwash and sand, cut the Hatteras Island road for days and change ferry schedules. Helene in 2024 also showed that a tropical storm can do enormous damage far inland, in the mountains.

For a coast trip, watch the tropical forecast a week out, keep plans flexible, and check DriveNC and the state ferry schedule. May, early June and October are the coast's best riding months.
