The short version

Ride the Black Hills in June or September

South Dakota's riding season is short and sharp. The Black Hills open up in May, hit their stride in June, get crowded in July and packed in August during the Sturgis rally, then empty out into a beautiful September. By November the high roads are cold and the Needles Highway is closed until spring.

So if you can choose, choose June or September. The roads are open, the weather is usually good, and you'll share the Needles and Iron Mountain Road with far fewer people than in rally week. If you want the rally, embrace it and book early. For where to ride, see the best motorcycle roads in South Dakota, and for the overview, South Dakota motorcycle rides.

General patterns, not a forecast. Every year is different. Check the weather and SD511 before you ride.

Spring

Spring: the Hills wake up slowly

Spring in the Black Hills is late and unpredictable. Snow can fall into April and sometimes May, especially at higher elevations around Sylvan Lake and Black Elk Peak. The Needles Highway closes for winter and usually reopens in spring once it's clear, so check Custer State Park or SD511 before you plan around it.

Early-season roads can carry sand and gravel left from winter, and frost can damage pavement. By late May most roads are open, the hills are green and the summer crowds haven't arrived. It's a good time to ride if you pack layers.

Summer

Summer and the Sturgis rally

June is the best summer month: green hills, long days and open roads. July brings peak tourist season around Mount Rushmore, Keystone and Custer State Park, and afternoon thunderstorms that build over the Hills, often with hail. Ride early and be ready to pull over.

August is rally month. The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally runs for about ten days in early August and fills roads, campgrounds and hotels across the Black Hills and beyond. Book lodging months ahead, ride the famous roads at dawn, and expect heavy traffic and lots of riders new to these roads. If you want empty roads, come in late June or after Labor Day. See South Dakota motorcycle events for rally tips.

The Badlands get hot in summer, often in the 90s and sometimes over 100. Ride the Badlands Loop early or late in the day.

Fall

Fall: color, bison and quiet roads

September is arguably the best month in the Black Hills. The rally crowds are gone, the weather is usually dry and mild, and the aspens and birch in Spearfish Canyon turn gold, usually peaking in late September and early October.

Late September also brings the Buffalo Roundup in Custer State Park, when the bison herd is driven in for its annual checkup and thousands of people come to watch. Parts of the park close that morning, so check the date before you plan a Wildlife Loop ride. By late October, cold mornings and early snow start to close the riding season.

Winter

Winter: park it or pick your days

From November to April, the Black Hills are cold and snowy, and the Needles Highway is closed. East River and the lower plains get mild, dry days now and then, but wind chill on the prairie is serious. Most South Dakota riders store the bike and plan next season.
