Riding South Dakota
South Dakota motorcycle rides: the Black Hills, the Badlands and Sturgis
South Dakota motorcycle rides center on the Black Hills: the Needles Highway, Iron Mountain Road, the Wildlife Loop in Custer State Park and Spearfish Canyon, with the Badlands an hour east. The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally fills these roads every August. Ride May through October, give the bison room and know that lane splitting isn't legal. Here's the guide.

Why ride South Dakota
Why South Dakota motorcycle rides draw riders from everywhere
Most of South Dakota is prairie, but its western edge holds one of the best riding areas in the country. The Black Hills pack tunnels, pigtail bridges, granite spires and mountain lakes into a region you can cross in an afternoon.
The Black Hills (Rapid City, Sturgis, Deadwood, Custer, Hill City, Keystone) are the core. Mount Rushmore, Custer State Park and Crazy Horse Memorial sit in the middle, linked by some of the best-known motorcycle roads in America.
The Badlands to the east are eroded rock in pink and tan bands, with a loop road through the national park. East River, the farm country around Sioux Falls and the Missouri River, is quieter riding with long open roads.

When is motorcycle season in South Dakota?
May through October is the season in the Black Hills. Needles Highway closes in winter and typically reopens in spring. June and September are the sweet spots: green hills, open roads and fewer crowds.

Rippin' is free on iPhone and Android. Tap Record Ride once and ride. You get route, miles, moving time, elevation and speed, and a Ride Wrapped recap ready to share.
Turf. The Peter Norbeck figure-eight is a natural loop, and closing a loop turns the land inside into your turf on the live map. Most of South Dakota is unclaimed, and empty land is free to claim. See Turf Wars.
Poker runs. The Black Hills already run on poker runs. In Rippin', each poker stop deals one card when you arrive, no QR codes. Hold five, swap the ones you don't want and your hand posts to the leaderboard. Bars, cafes and shops can become stops through partners. See poker runs.
Roads, squads and events. Riders can add a road and the team checks it. Bring your crew with squads and find meets on the events map.
Honest note: Rippin' started in Southern California and South Dakota has few riders and roads in the app so far. That means the turf is open and the boards are empty.
