The short version

Wisconsin's season, south to north

Wisconsin gets a solid five months of riding, and a few bonus weeks on either end if you live in the south. The southern half warms up first, and the Driftless coulees are green and riding well by late May. The Northwoods and the Lake Superior shore lag weeks behind, with snow that can hang on into April and return in October.

Two Great Lakes shape the edges. Lake Michigan cools Door County and the Milwaukee shore in spring, and Lake Superior keeps Bayfield cool all summer. Pack a layer for any ride near the water. The best motorcycle roads in Wisconsin guide lists the best season for each road.

Spring

Spring: sand, frost heaves and cold mornings

The first warm Saturday in April brings Wisconsin bikes out, and the county roads aren't ready for them. Winter sand sits in the corners for weeks, frost heaves buck the pavement, and potholes hide in the shade. Ride the first few weeks well below your usual pace, and look through every corner before you commit.

Mornings stay cold into May, especially near the lakes, and rain is common. By late May the Driftless is green, the tourists haven't arrived, and the riding is about as good as it gets. The inland fishing opener in early May also puts boat trailers on the roads up north.

Summer

Summer: Driftless loops and busy lake towns

June through August is peak season everywhere. Door County, the Dells and the lake towns are packed on weekends, so pick weekdays or early starts there. The Driftless and the north stay much quieter, and the Lake Superior shore stays cool even in a July heat wave.

Summer is also construction season, so expect lane closures on the main routes, and afternoon thunderstorms on hot days. Up north, biting bugs are part of early summer.

Fall color

Fall color: the best weeks to ride Wisconsin

Color starts in the Northwoods and around Bayfield in late September, reaches Door County in early to mid October, and moves through the Driftless and the south in mid to late October. Follow it south and you get about a month. WI 35 on the Mississippi bluffs and the Kickapoo Valley are favorites.

Fall brings cold mornings, wet leaves in the shade, harvest equipment on rural roads and more deer on the move. Wisconsin's nine-day gun deer season opens the Saturday before Thanksgiving, which puts hunters on the back roads, and most riders are done by then.

Questions riders ask.

When does motorcycle season start in Wisconsin?

In the south, late April or May, with sandy corners at first. The north opens closer to late May or June.

What is the best month to ride in Wisconsin?

Late May and June for the green Driftless, or late September to mid October for fall color. July and August are great too, just busier.

When is fall color in Wisconsin?

Late September in the Northwoods, early to mid October in Door County, and mid to late October in the Driftless and the south. Exact timing changes every year.

Can you ride a motorcycle in Wisconsin in winter?

Rarely. Snow, salt and cold keep most bikes stored from November to March.

When should I avoid Door County?

Summer and fall color weekends are the busiest. Go on a weekday or early in the morning.

Why are Wisconsin roads sandy in spring?

Road crews spread sand and salt all winter, and it collects in the corners of county roads until rain and street sweepers clear it, often into May.
