Wisconsin motorcycle rides: Driftless curves and lake country
The best Wisconsin motorcycle rides are in the Driftless Area of the southwest, where lettered county roads snake through coulees and bluffs, and along WI 35, the Great River Road on the Mississippi. Door County, the Kettle Moraine and the Lake Superior shore round it out. Here are the roads, when to ride, what the law says, and how to track it free with Rippin'.

Why ride Wisconsin
Why ride Wisconsin: curves the glaciers missed
Wisconsin may be the best riding state in the Midwest, and the reason is geology. The last glaciers skipped the southwest corner, leaving the Driftless Area: steep coulees, ridgetops and river valleys. Wisconsin also gives its county roads letters instead of numbers, and in the Driftless those lettered roads twist along every ridge and creek. Riders come from Chicago, Minneapolis and beyond just for them.
Beyond the southwest, there are five other regions. The Mississippi along the western border has WI 35 and its bluffs. The Wisconsin River has WI 60 and the Baraboo Hills around Devil's Lake. Southeast Wisconsin has Milwaukee, Harley-Davidson's hometown, and the Kettle Moraine. Door County reaches into Lake Michigan with orchards and harbor towns. And the north, from the Northwoods to Bayfield on Lake Superior, is forest, lakes and long quiet roads.
Madison is a great base for the Driftless and the Baraboo Hills. Door County and Lake Superior are weekend trips.
The roads
Best motorcycle roads in Wisconsin
These are well-known Wisconsin rides. Many of the best Driftless roads are lettered county roads; the Rustic Roads program points to many more.
- Great River Road (WI 35)Follows the Mississippi down the western edge of the state through river towns like Pepin, Alma and Prairie du Chien, under tall bluffs. Watch for slow RVs and town speed limits that drop quickly.
- Kickapoo Valley (WI 131) and Driftless county roadsWI 131 follows the Kickapoo River through the heart of the Driftless, and the lettered county roads around it climb ridges and drop into coulees. Watch for gravel, tractors and Amish buggies, and blind crests on the ridgetops.
- Lower Wisconsin River (WI 60)Runs along the Wisconsin River from the Sauk City area west toward the Mississippi, with bluffs, sandbars and small towns. Watch for deer, farm traffic and summer canoe traffic at landings.
- Baraboo Hills and the Merrimac ferry (WI 113)WI 113 crosses Lake Wisconsin on a free seasonal car ferry at Merrimac, then climbs into the Baraboo Hills near Devil's Lake State Park. Watch for lines at the ferry on summer weekends, and park traffic near Devil's Lake.
- Kettle Moraine Scenic DriveA signed route through the Kettle Moraine State Forest, rolling over glacial hills and past lakes west and north of Milwaukee. Watch for cyclists, park traffic and sudden stops where the route turns.
- Door County (WI 42 and WI 57)WI 57 runs up the Lake Michigan side of the peninsula and WI 42 runs up the Green Bay side through Fish Creek and Ephraim, then on to the tight, tree-lined curves near the tip. Watch for heavy summer and fall tourist traffic.
- Lake Superior shore (WI 13)Loops around the Bayfield Peninsula past Washburn, Bayfield and Cornucopia, with views of the Apostle Islands. Watch for cold, foggy conditions near the lake and deer in the woods.
- Wisconsin Rustic RoadsThe state's Rustic Roads program marks over a hundred scenic backroads with brown and yellow signs. Many are paved and great on a bike. Watch for gravel: some sections are unpaved or lightly surfaced, so check before you commit.
Road conditions, closures and construction change every season. Check before you ride.
When to ride
When to ride in Wisconsin
Wisconsin's riding season runs from about May through October in the south and is shorter in the north. Snow can linger into April in the Northwoods and come back in October, and the Lake Superior shore stays cool all summer.
Fall is the highlight. Color usually starts in the north in late September and reaches the Driftless and the south in October. Spring brings frost heaves and winter sand on the county road curves, so the first rides of the year call for caution.
- April: a few nice days in the south, but cold mornings and sand in the curves.
- May and June: green coulees, good temperatures and fewer tourists. Prime time for the Driftless.
- July and August: warm and busy. Door County and the Dells are packed; the Driftless and the north are quieter.
- September and October: fall color, north first. The Great River Road and Door County are favorites.
- November to March: snow, salt and cold. Most bikes are stored.
Laws
Wisconsin motorcycle laws: helmets and lane splitting
Wisconsin requires helmets for some riders, mainly younger riders; the age and conditions are set in state law. The IIHS helmet law overview has the details. Whatever the law says for you, wear one, ideally full-face.
As of 2026, Wisconsin law doesn't allow lane splitting or filtering. Several states are changing their laws, so check before you ride.
This is a plain-language summary, not legal advice. Laws change, so check the current Wisconsin statute or the state motor vehicle agency before you ride.

Local tips
Wisconsin riding tips
- Lettered county roadsWisconsin county roads use letters, like County Road ZZ. Counties reuse letters, so plan on a map, not by letter alone.
- Deer and farm trafficWisconsin has a huge deer population, and the Driftless is full of farms. Expect deer at dawn and dusk, and tractors, manure and gravel on the county roads.
- Spring sand and frost heavesWinter sand stays in the corners of county roads well into spring, and frost heaves can make the pavement buck. Ride the first weeks with care.
- The Merrimac ferryThe free WI 113 ferry runs seasonally across Lake Wisconsin. Expect lines on summer weekends.
- Lake weatherNear Lake Michigan and Lake Superior, temperatures can drop fast. Pack a layer even in July.
Rippin' in Wisconsin
How the Rippin' motorcycle app works in Wisconsin
Rippin' started in Southern California, and Wisconsin is early days: few riders and roads in the app so far. That leaves the Turf Wars map open. Ride a Driftless loop that closes back on itself and the coulees inside become your turf, with your name on them. Empty land is free to claim, and a tighter loop through someone else's turf carves it out.
The best Wisconsin roads are not in the app yet either. Put a start and finish gate on a Driftless county road with Create a Segment, someone on the Rippin' team checks it, and your name stays on it. Riders who ride through it land on its board. See how roads get added.
- Segments: ride through a road and you're timed automatically, no start button. See segments and leaderboards.
- Poker runs: supper clubs, cafes and shops can become a poker stop.
- Squads: your crew's chat, plans and turf in one place. See squads.
- Free: recording, turf, poker runs, segments, squads and events are free.
