The best time to ride a motorcycle in Idaho

The best time to ride a motorcycle in Idaho is June through September in the mountains, when Stanley, the Sawtooths, the Lochsa and the Panhandle are open and dry. Boise and the Snake River country ride well much longer, from spring into late fall. September is the pick for many riders: cool, clear and full of color in the river canyons.

The short version

Idaho's season depends on elevation more than the calendar

Boise sits around 2,700 feet in the Treasure Valley. Stanley, at the foot of the Sawtooths, is above 6,000 feet and one of the coldest towns in the lower 48, and the summits on the way there run from about 7,000 to almost 8,700 feet. The Panhandle is lower but wetter and snowier. So the same weekend can be perfect in Boise and snowy on Galena Summit.

The pattern is simple: the valleys ride most of the year, the mountains ride in summer, and spring and fall are the shoulder seasons when you pick your elevation. The best roads in the state, the ones in our Idaho roads guide, mostly sit in the mountain window.

Boise and the valleys

Boise, the Treasure Valley and the Snake River Plain

Boise, Nampa, Twin Falls, Pocatello and Idaho Falls get real winters, but plenty of dry days. Winter inversions can trap cold, fog and haze in the Treasure Valley for days at a time, so a clear afternoon is the window. By March and April, the valley roads and the Snake River canyon open up while the mountains are still snowed in.

Valley summers run hot, often into the 90s, so the move is a dawn start or a run up into the mountains. Fall is long and pleasant in the south, with good riding into November in many years. The Thousand Springs byway and Craters of the Moon are best in spring and fall.

Central mountains

Stanley, the Sawtooths and the Salmon River: summer

The roads into Stanley, ID 21 over Banner Summit and ID 75 over Galena Summit, are the best rides in the state and the shortest season. They're plowed, but winter brings snow, ice and avalanche closures between Lowman and Stanley. Late May and early June can still bring snow to the summits, and mornings in Stanley are cold even in July.

July and August are prime, with long days and rivers full of rafters. September is often better: fewer people, crisp air and gold in the aspens and larches. By October, the first storms can bring snow to the passes, sometimes with little warning.

North Idaho

The Panhandle and the Lochsa

North Idaho is wetter and snowier than the south. Coeur d'Alene, Sandpoint and the lake roads ride best from June to September, with spring often wet and cool. US 12 along the Lochsa stays open year-round, but winter means snow and ice over Lolo Pass, and spring runoff in May and June sends the rivers high and fast.

Late summer and early fall are the sweet spot on the Lochsa and the lakes. By late September, larches and cottonwoods start to turn, and the summer traffic thins out.

Questions riders ask.

What is the best month to ride a motorcycle in Idaho?

September for most of the state: cool, clear, colorful and quieter than midsummer. July and August are the safest bet for the highest roads.

When is motorcycle season in Idaho?

Roughly June to September in the mountains and March to November in the valleys around Boise and the Snake River, depending on the year.

When do the roads to Stanley clear of snow?

ID 21 and ID 75 are plowed, but snow and ice linger on Banner and Galena summits into late spring. Most riders wait until June. Check Idaho 511.

Can you ride a motorcycle in Boise in winter?

On dry days, yes, though inversions can bring cold, fog and haze. The mountains are a different story until late spring.
