Riding Idaho
Idaho motorcycle rides: river canyons and mountain byways
Idaho motorcycle rides follow rivers through deep canyons and climb into the Sawtooths, with long stretches of quiet road and very little traffic. The season runs roughly late spring to fall in the mountains. This guide covers the best roads, when to ride, Idaho's helmet and lane rules, and how the free Rippin' app works here.

Why ride it
Why Idaho motorcycle rides are some of the West's best kept secrets
Idaho is mostly mountains, and the roads follow the rivers through them. In north-central Idaho, US 12 runs along the Clearwater and Lochsa rivers to Montana. In the middle of the state, the Sawtooth Mountains, the Salmon River and the town of Stanley sit at the center of three great byways. Southwest Idaho has Boise and the Payette River.
The Panhandle in the north is lakes and forest: Coeur d'Alene, Sandpoint and Lake Pend Oreille. Southern and eastern Idaho cross the Snake River Plain, with lava fields at Craters of the Moon and the west side of the Tetons in Teton Valley.
What ties it together is space. Idaho roads are long, curvy and quiet compared with almost anywhere on the West Coast, and many of the best ones are scenic byways through national forest. The tradeoff is a shorter season up high and long gaps between towns.
The roads
The best motorcycle roads in Idaho
Ten roads, from the Panhandle lakes to the Snake River Plain.
- US 12, Northwest Passage Scenic BywayFollows the Clearwater and Lochsa rivers from Lewiston east to Lolo Pass on the Montana line, famous for its sign warning of a winding road for the next 99 miles. Watch for few services on the long Lochsa stretch, log trucks and deer.
- Ponderosa Pine Scenic Byway (ID 21)Runs from Boise past Idaho City and Lowman over Banner Summit to Stanley, through forest and river canyon. Watch for gravel in the corners, deer, and winter avalanche closures between Lowman and Stanley.
- Sawtooth Scenic Byway (ID 75)Climbs from Ketchum and Sun Valley over Galena Summit, with the Sawtooth Valley opening up below on the way to Stanley. Watch for cold at the summit and snow early and late in the season.
- Salmon River Scenic Byway (ID 75 and US 93)Follows the Salmon River from Stanley down through Challis to the town of Salmon. Watch for rockfall, rafting traffic in summer and deer near the river.
- Payette River Scenic Byway (ID 55)Runs north from the Boise area along the Payette River to McCall. Watch for heavy weekend traffic, slow trailers and few passing spots in the canyon.
- US 95 over White Bird HillClimbs a long, steep grade between White Bird and Grangeville on Idaho's main north-south highway, with views over the Salmon River country. Watch for the grade, trucks and wind.
- Lake Coeur d'Alene Scenic Byway (ID 97)Hugs the east shore of Lake Coeur d'Alene south from I-90, with tight curves and water views. Watch for boat trailers in summer and deer.
- Pend Oreille Scenic Byway (ID 200)Runs east from Sandpoint along Lake Pend Oreille toward the Montana line. Watch for wildlife and summer traffic near the lake towns.
- Teton Scenic BywayRuns through Teton Valley past Driggs and Victor with the west face of the Tetons in view, then over Pine Creek Pass to Swan Valley. Watch for farm equipment and wildlife.
- Craters of the Moon (US 20, US 26 and US 93)Crosses black lava fields at Craters of the Moon National Monument near Arco, with the Lost River Range on the horizon. Watch for crosswinds, summer heat and long gaps between gas.
When to ride
When to ride Idaho
- MountainsRoughly May or June through October, depending on snow. Banner Summit, Galena Summit and Lolo Pass can see snow early and late in the season.
- Boise and the valleysThe Treasure Valley rides most of the year. Summer gets hot, so ride early or head for the mountains.
- Spring gravelWinter road sand lingers into spring on mountain corners. Early season rides need extra care until crews sweep.
- Fall and smokeFall color in the river canyons makes September and October great rides. Late summer can bring wildfire smoke and closures, so check before long trips.
The rules
Idaho motorcycle laws: helmets and lane splitting
Helmets. Idaho requires helmets for some riders, mainly younger riders; the age and conditions are set in state law. See the IIHS helmet law overview. Whatever the law says, wear one, especially with deer and elk on every mountain road.
Lane splitting and filtering. As of 2026, Idaho law doesn't allow lane splitting or filtering. Several states are changing their laws, so check before you ride. Neighboring Utah and Montana allow filtering under conditions, so the rules change at the state line.
This is a summary, not legal advice. Laws change, so check the Idaho Statutes or the Idaho DMV before you ride.
Events
Idaho motorcycle events
Idaho's calendar is local: bike nights in Boise, Coeur d'Alene, Idaho Falls and Twin Falls, club rides, swap meets and charity runs, mostly in the summer months. The Distinguished Gentleman's Ride, a worldwide charity ride usually held in May, rides in cities around the world. For a big rally, Idaho riders can make the trip to Street Vibrations in Reno, Nevada, in the fall, or the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in South Dakota in August. Check the organizer for dates.
In Rippin', open Meets to find bike nights and rides near you and RSVP. Repeating weekly and monthly meets show their next date. Any rider can post a meet, and shops and clubs can add their events. See motorcycle events in Rippin'.

Riding tips for Idaho

- Fuel between townsOn US 12, ID 21 and the Salmon River country, towns are far apart. Fill up before the long stretches.
- Log trucksLogging traffic uses US 12 and many forest roads. Give trucks room on the curves and expect bark and debris.

Rippin' in Idaho
How the Rippin' motorcycle app works in Idaho
Rippin' started in Southern California, and Idaho is early: few riders and few rider-added roads so far. Turf around Boise, Coeur d'Alene, Idaho Falls and Twin Falls is mostly unclaimed. Everything below is free on iPhone and Android.
Ride a loop that closes back on itself and the land inside becomes your turf on the live map. Idaho has natural loops, like Boise to Stanley on ID 21 and back through Ketchum on ID 75 and US 20, which would wrap a big piece of the state. Read how Turf Wars works.
Moto shops, cafes and bars can become poker stops that deal a card to every rider who shows up; see poker runs, and businesses can join as a stop. Add an Idaho road as a segment and a person on the Rippin' team checks it before it goes live; here's how roads get added. Plan rides with your crew in squads.
