The best time to ride a motorcycle in Kansas

The best time to ride a motorcycle in Kansas is September and October, when the heat and storms ease and the prairie turns gold and rust. Late May and June are the other sweet spot, with the Flint Hills at their greenest, though that's also severe weather season. Most Kansans ride April through October and pick the warm, dry days the rest of the year.

The short version

Kansas has a long season with two sweet spots

Kansas riding season runs roughly April through October. Inside that, two windows stand out. Late spring, from mid-May into June, is when the Flint Hills are bright green after the burns and the wildflowers are out. Fall, September and October, is calmer, cooler and drier, with the prairie turning gold. Summer works with early starts. Winter has good days, but they come between cold snaps and storms.

The state is about 400 miles wide and climbs from under 1,000 feet in the east to over 4,000 near the Colorado line, so the west is drier, windier and gets more snow, while the east is greener and more humid. The table below breaks it down by region. For where to ride, see the best motorcycle roads in Kansas, and for the overview, Kansas motorcycle rides.

Spring

Spring: prairie burns, green hills and storms

Spring in the Flint Hills starts with fire. Ranchers burn the tallgrass prairie, mostly in March and April, to keep trees out and grow fresh grass for cattle. It's a big sight at night, but smoke can blow across K-177 and other roads and cut visibility to almost nothing. If you can't see, slow down and get well off the road. A few weeks later the burned hills turn the brightest green you'll see in Kansas.

April through June is also severe weather season, with May and June usually the most active months. Storms can go from building clouds to hail, straight-line winds and tornadoes in an afternoon. Check the forecast every morning, know where you'd take shelter, and don't try to outrun a storm across open country.

Summer

Summer: heat, wind and wheat harvest

July and August are hot across Kansas, with plenty of days in the upper 90s and above, and the wind can feel like a hair dryer. Ride early and be off the road by early afternoon.

Wheat harvest usually runs from mid-June into July, starting in the south and moving north. Combines and grain trucks run on two-lane roads, often slowly, and they track dirt and chaff onto the pavement near field entrances. Pass with care, give them room and watch for trucks pulling out of fields.

Fall

Fall: Kansas at its best

September and October are the best months to ride Kansas. Storms fade, the wind usually settles, and the tallgrass turns gold, red and rust across the Flint Hills. The wooded bluffs along the Missouri River on K-7 add some fall color in October, and migrating birds fill the wetlands around Cheyenne Bottoms and Quivira.

Fall is also when deer are on the move, especially around the November rut, and fall row crop harvest puts equipment back on the roads. Ease off at dawn and dusk wherever a creek or tree line meets the road.

Winter

Winter: pick your days

Kansas winters are cold, windy and unpredictable, with ice storms in the east and blizzards more likely in the west. Still, mild, dry days show up most months. Wait for the sun to burn off frost, watch for shaded corners and bridges that stay icy, and keep rides short and close to home.
