The short version

Kentucky's riding season, region by region

Kentucky doesn't have the big elevation swings of North Carolina or Colorado. Most of the state sits a few hundred to about a thousand feet above sea level, and even Black Mountain, the highest point, is 4,145 feet. So the season is set more by weather than by altitude: humid summers, colorful falls, mixed winters and stormy springs.

Still, the regions ride differently. The eastern mountains get colder, foggier and icier, with shaded hollows that hold frost long after the sun is up elsewhere. The Bluegrass and Louisville ride most of the year. South-central Kentucky and the western lakes run a little warmer and get plenty of dry winter days.

Spring

Spring: redbuds, Derby week and storms

Kentucky turns green fast in April. Redbuds and dogwoods bloom across the Bluegrass and the hills, waterfalls in the Gorge and at Cumberland Falls run high, and the horse farms along Paris Pike look their best. It's one of the best times to ride the best motorcycle roads in Kentucky.

Spring is also storm season. Strong thunderstorms and tornado warnings hit Kentucky in spring, and severe weather can come in other seasons too. Check the forecast before a long ride and know where you'd shelter.

Two more spring notes. Freeze and thaw leave potholes and gravel on county roads in March and April, so ride the back roads with margin. And Louisville fills up around the Kentucky Derby on the first Saturday in May, with traffic and hotels to match.

Summer

Summer: heat, humidity and fast storms

July and August are hot and humid statewide. Ride early, take shaded breaks, and drink water at every stop. Wooded roads like the Trace in Land Between the Lakes and the forest byways in the Daniel Boone are more comfortable than open farm roads.

Afternoon thunderstorms build quickly, especially in the mountains, and can drop heavy rain on roads that wind along creeks. Never ride through water over the road in the hollows; flash flooding in eastern Kentucky can be deadly.

On cool summer mornings, fog fills the river valleys and the Gorge. Give it time to burn off instead of riding blind into a curve.

Fall

Fall: color in the Gorge and the east

October is Kentucky's best riding month for most riders. Humidity drops, days stay mild, and color peaks in the Red River Gorge and the eastern mountains, usually in mid to late October, with the Bluegrass and the west following. The Gorge gets crowded on October weekends, so ride it early or midweek.

Fall is also when deer move most, and eastern Kentucky's elk herd, one of the largest east of the Rockies, is active too. Slow down at dawn and dusk near field edges. Wet leaves in shaded curves are as slick as ice.

Winter

Winter riding in Kentucky

Kentucky winters swing back and forth. Western Kentucky and the Bluegrass often get dry, mild spells between cold fronts that are fine for a layered ride. Some winters bring freezing rain or snow statewide, and in the eastern mountains, hollows and north-facing curves can stay icy for days after the rest of the state dries out.

After a storm, roads in coal country and the hills are treated with salt and cinders that linger in the corners. Ride sunny afternoons, wear layers or heated gear, and plan to be home before dark.
