The short version
Ohio's riding season, north to south
Ohio's season runs from about April to October, but it isn't the same everywhere. The southern part of the state, from Cincinnati along the Ohio River and up into the southeast hills, warms up first and often has good riding days into November. Northern Ohio cools faster, and the snowbelt east of Cleveland, where lake-effect snow piles up, starts later in spring and ends earlier in fall. Columbus and central Ohio sit in between.
The best months are the mild ones: May and June, when the hills are green and the roads are clean, and September and October, when the air is dry and the southeast turns color. Our guide to the best motorcycle roads in Ohio lists the best season for each road.

March to May
Spring: potholes, gravel and river fog
Ohio's freeze and thaw cycles are hard on pavement. By March, commuter roads are full of potholes, and the corners of hill roads are coated with gravel and leftover salt. The first rides of the year belong on roads you know, at a pace that leaves room for a surprise in every corner.
In the south, spring storms can flood low stretches along the Ohio River, including parts of US 52, and morning fog fills the river and creek valleys in the southeast hills. Up north, the lake stays cold into late spring, so the shore can feel much cooler than Columbus on the same day. By May the roads are mostly swept, the hills are green and the season is on.
- Check tires, brakes, battery and lights before the first ride.
- Expect gravel at the apex of hill road corners until the first sweeps.
- Wait for valley fog to lift before riding the southeast hills in the morning.
- Watch for road crews starting the construction season.
June to August
Summer: humid days, storms and orange barrels
June is one of the best months of the year. July and August get hot and humid across the state, and afternoon thunderstorms can turn severe fast. Ride early in the day, carry rain gear and keep an eye on the radar. The Lake Erie shore is often a few degrees cooler in the afternoon, which makes it a good summer ride.
Summer is also construction season, so expect lane shifts, grooved pavement and steel plates in work zones, and fresh chip seal on rural roads. Hocking Hills, Amish Country and the lake shore are at their busiest on summer weekends, so weekdays and early starts pay off.
September to November
Fall: color in the hills, deer on the roads
September and October are Ohio's best riding months. The air dries out, the summer crowds thin, and fall color usually reaches northern Ohio first, around mid October, and the southern hills mid to late October. The Hocking Hills, Shawnee State Forest and the Wayne National Forest roads are at their best.
Fall is also deer season, and deer crashes in Ohio climb from October through December, with dawn and dusk the riskiest times. Slow down in wooded stretches, cover the brakes, and expect a second deer when you see one. Add harvest equipment on rural roads, wet leaves in shaded corners, valley fog in the mornings and short days once the clocks fall back.

November to March
Winter riding and storage in Ohio
From about November to March, salt and snow make most Ohio riding a bad idea, especially in the north. Southern Ohio gets the odd mild, dry winter day, and if you ride one, rinse the salt off the same day. Most riders store the bike.
- Fill the tank with stabilized fuel and run the engine for a few minutes.
- Keep the battery on a tender, or store it somewhere above freezing.
- Change the oil before storage.
- Wash off salt, dry the bike and use a breathable cover.
- Set tire pressure and keep mice out of the exhaust.
