How to use this list of the best motorcycle roads in Ohio
Ohio's riding splits along an old glacier line. The north and west were flattened by ice, so the roads there are straight and the scenery is farmland and lake shore. The southeast third of the state never got flattened, and that's where the hills, ridges and creek valleys are, along with Ohio's famous roads. Columbus sits close to the line, about an hour from the Hocking Hills.
The 14 roads below are grouped into four regions: the southeast hills, Hocking Hills, the Ohio River and the south, and northern Ohio. Most riders pick two or three in one region for a day. Back roads in the hills can change after storms, with gravel washed into corners and fresh chip seal in summer, so ride the first pass at a sightseeing pace. For timing, see the best time to ride a motorcycle in Ohio. For laws, events and regions, start at the Ohio motorcycle rides hub.
Southeast hills
The southeast hills: the Triple Nickel and Rattlesnake Ridge
- 1. Triple Nickel (OH 555)Why: Ohio's best-known motorcycle road, running south from the Zanesville area through the hills of Morgan County. Tight bends, blind crests, dips and very little flat ground, with farms and woods all the way. Watch for: Crests and dips that hide farm equipment, gravel washed onto the road after storms, deer, and other riders on very different paces. Ride it at a pace that lets you stop for whatever is over the next rise. Best season: May to October.
- 2. Rattlesnake Ridge (OH 78)Why: OH 78 crosses the southeast hills from the Nelsonville and Glouster area east toward Woodsfield and the Ohio River at Clarington, with long stretches through the Wayne National Forest. Curves, ridgelines and small towns. Watch for: Deer at dawn and dusk, gravel after storms and slow farm traffic. Best season: May to October.
- 3. Covered Bridge Scenic Byway (OH 26)Why: OH 26 runs north from Marietta along the Little Muskingum River toward Woodsfield, past several historic covered bridges and through the Wayne National Forest. Relaxed curves and real backcountry. Watch for: Narrow sections, fresh chip seal in summer and slow vehicles. Best season: May to October.
Hocking Hills
Hocking Hills and Zaleski State Forest
- 4. Hocking Hills loop (OH 374, OH 664 and OH 56)Why: Southwest of Logan, these three roads tie together Old Man's Cave, Ash Cave, Cantwell Cliffs, Rock House and Conkle's Hollow. Short, curvy and wooded, about an hour from Columbus. Watch for: Weekend crowds, cars pulling in and out of trailhead lots, people walking along the road and wet leaves in fall. Best season: May to June, and weekdays in October.
- 5. OH 278 through Zaleski State ForestWhy: OH 278 winds through Zaleski State Forest past Lake Hope State Park in Vinton County, a quieter neighbor to the Hocking Hills with tight, wooded curves. Watch for: Deer, narrow lanes without shoulders and park traffic near the lake. Best season: May to October.
The river and the south
The Ohio River and southern Ohio
- 6. OH 7 along the Ohio RiverWhy: OH 7 tracks the Ohio River along the state's eastern edge, through Marietta and north toward East Liverpool, with the West Virginia hills across the water. Pair it with OH 78 or OH 26 for a loop. Watch for: Trucks, rail crossings and traffic through the river towns. Best season: April to October.
- 7. Ohio River Scenic Byway (US 52)Why: US 52 follows the river east from Cincinnati through towns like New Richmond, Ripley and Aberdeen toward Portsmouth, with long river views and old brick main streets. Watch for: Trucks, low stretches that can flood in spring and town speed zones. Best season: April to October.
- 8. OH 125 through Shawnee State ForestWhy: West of Portsmouth, OH 125 runs through Shawnee State Forest, Ohio's largest state forest, a steep, wooded corner often called the Little Smokies of Ohio. Watch for: Deer, sharp bends, few services and wet leaves in fall. Best season: May to October, with color late in October.
- 9. OH 73 and OH 41 to Serpent MoundWhy: In Adams County, OH 73 and OH 41 roll through hills and farm country around Peebles, and Serpent Mound, the huge ancient effigy mound, sits right off OH 73. A good half day out of Cincinnati with something worth stopping for. Watch for: Farm traffic, horse-drawn buggies, deer and blind crests. Best season: May to October.
Northern Ohio
Northern Ohio: Mohican, Amish Country, the valley and the lake
- 10. OH 97 to MohicanWhy: OH 97 runs from Bellville through Butler toward Loudonville and the Mohican State Park area, a hilly, wooded pocket of north central Ohio and a popular weekend ride. Watch for: Canoe livery traffic and trailers around Loudonville in summer, deer and lots of other riders on nice weekends. Best season: May to October.
- 11. Amish Country (OH 39 and OH 62)Why: Rolling farm country through Holmes County towns like Millersburg, Berlin and Walnut Creek, with OH 39 continuing east toward Sugarcreek. Slow, pretty and full of good food. Watch for: Horse-drawn buggies over blind crests and at dusk, horse droppings on the road, tour buses, and many businesses closed on Sundays. Best season: May to October, on weekdays.
- 12. Riverview Road, Cuyahoga ValleyWhy: Riverview Road winds through Cuyahoga Valley National Park between Cleveland and Akron, past the village of Peninsula, through woods and along the river. A green escape close to two big cities. Watch for: Low speed limits, cyclists, trail crossings and park traffic. Best season: May to October.
- 13. Lake Erie shore (OH 2 and US 6)Why: Ride along the lake from the Port Clinton area past Marblehead Lighthouse, Sandusky, Huron and Vermilion, with water views the whole way. Ferries from Catawba and Marblehead carry vehicles out to the islands; check each one's rules for motorcycles. Watch for: Heavy summer traffic around Sandusky and Cedar Point, wind off the lake and cool temperatures near the water. Best season: June to September.
- 14. Ashtabula County covered bridgesWhy: In the far northeast corner, Ashtabula County's back roads link a long list of covered bridges, including the Smolen-Gulf Bridge, the longest covered bridge in the country. Watch for: Wooden decks that get slick when wet, gravel approaches, narrow one-lane crossings and lake-effect weather early and late in the season. Best season: June to October.
Link them
Ohio loops that link the best roads
- The river and ridge loopFrom Marietta, ride OH 7 north along the Ohio River to Clarington, take OH 78 west over the hills to Woodsfield, then OH 26 south along the Little Muskingum back to Marietta. River views, ridgelines and covered bridges, and it closes on itself.
- The Triple Nickel dayOH 555 and OH 78 cross the same Morgan County hills, so riders often link them into one day. Plan the connectors with the loop builder before you go, since some back roads in the hills are gravel.
- The Hocking Hills dayFrom Logan, link OH 664, OH 374 and OH 56 to string together Old Man's Cave, Cantwell Cliffs and Ash Cave, then add OH 278 through Zaleski for more curves. Go on a weekday in fall to dodge the crowds.

Ohio roads riders have added in Rippin'
Below are the Ohio roads riders have added to Rippin', pulled live from the app. Rippin' started in Southern California, and many states have only a few roads in the app so far, so most of the roads on this page are still open for someone to add.
Ride the road with Rippin' recording, open Segments and tap Create a Segment, then set a start gate and a finish gate and trace the line. A person on the Rippin' team checks every road before it goes live, and your name stays on it. Riders who ride through it land on its board, and the crown goes to the rider who owns the road. Rippin' never rewards speed on public roads, and on a road with blind crests like the Triple Nickel, that's the point: the board is about who rides it. More on segments and leaderboards and how roads get added.
A loop like the river and ridge ride also claims turf: the land inside a loop that closes on itself becomes yours on the live map, and empty land is free to claim.
