Recording

What a free motorcycle GPS app should record, and what Rippin' records

Most riders searching for a GPS app want two things: a clean record of where they rode, and directions when they need them. Recording is where Rippin' starts.

Tap Record Ride once, put the phone in your pocket or on the mount, and ride. There are no lap buttons and no route to set up first. Rippin' tracks the ride in the background while the screen is off, and when you tap Stop you get a Ride Wrapped recap with the map, miles and anything you earned along the way. The full walkthrough is on the motorcycle ride tracker page.

Navigation

Turn-by-turn directions on loops you build

Rippin' navigation starts with the loop builder. You decide the roads, and the app talks you through them.

While you're recording you also get route options and alternates, an arrival time, traffic, and the posted speed limit for the road you're on. More detail on the loop builder and navigation page. If you don't know where to go, the AI ride planner can build a loop for you.

  1. 1

Tap roads to build a loop

Open the map and tap the roads you want to ride. The loop follows them.

  2. 2

    Ride it inside Rippin'

Start the loop and get turn-by-turn directions while your ride records.

  3. 3

    Or hand it off

Prefer your usual nav? Send the route to Apple Maps or Google Maps instead.

  4. 4

    Go anywhere on the map

Use Route me here from any spot on the map, like a poker stop, a meet or a viewpoint.

The honest part

Rippin' has no offline maps. Here's what to do about it

Rippin' does not download maps for offline use. If your riding takes you deep into canyons, mountains or open desert where your phone loses signal for long stretches, a nav app with offline maps is the right tool. As of 2026, REVER Pro is $39.99 a year and includes offline maps, Butler Maps and turn-by-turn, and Calimoto's Premium plans run $39.99 to $79.99 a year in the US. Both are better than Rippin' for pure navigation. Check the store for current pricing.

Lots of riders run both: the nav app on the bars, Rippin' recording in the background so the ride still counts for turf, segments and points. Long empty roads, like a lot of what you'll find in our Arizona riding guide, are exactly where that combo makes sense.

FAQ

Questions riders ask.

Yes. Rippin' is free on iPhone and Android and records every ride with GPS, with turn-by-turn on loops you build. It has no offline maps.

Does Rippin' have turn-by-turn navigation?

Yes. Build a loop by tapping roads on the map, then ride it with turn-by-turn inside Rippin', or hand the route to Apple Maps or Google Maps.

Can I export my rides as GPX?

Yes. You can export rides as GPX files and import old rides from GPX, free.

Does Rippin' show speed limits?

Yes. While you're recording, Rippin' shows the posted speed limit along with route options, arrival time and traffic.
