Riding Colorado

Colorado motorcycle rides: the passes, canyons and loops worth riding

Colorado motorcycle rides are about mountain passes: Trail Ridge Road, Independence Pass, the Million Dollar Highway and the San Juan Skyway, plus canyon runs like the Poudre and Big Thompson close to the Front Range. The high roads open roughly late May to October, afternoon storms are a daily factor, and since 2024 Colorado allows lane filtering under conditions. Here's the full rundown.

Why ride Colorado

Why Colorado motorcycle rides are on every rider's list

Colorado has a lot of paved road above 10,000 feet, linking mining towns, ski towns and national parks.

The Front Range (Fort Collins, Boulder, Denver, Colorado Springs) is home base for most riders. The canyons start right at the edge of town: Poudre Canyon, Big Thompson, Boulder Canyon, and the Peak to Peak Highway along the foothills.

The central mountains are the passes around Leadville, Aspen and Buena Vista. The Western Slope adds Grand Mesa and the Black Canyon country. The San Juans (Ouray, Silverton, Durango, Telluride) are why many riders visit at all.

Best roads

The best motorcycle roads in Colorado

All paved, all well known. Mountain roads are seasonal and can close for snow, rockfall or construction, so check CDOT or the park before you head out.

When to ride

When is motorcycle season in Colorado?

High passes generally ride from late May or June through September and into October. Trail Ridge Road and Independence Pass close for winter, and an early storm can close any pass for a day in September. Plan your big pass days for July and August.

The Front Range and lower valleys ride much of the year on dry days between storms, but roads carry sand and de-icer residue after snow.

Afternoon storms are the rule in summer. Lightning, hail and sudden cold rain build over the peaks most afternoons. Get over the highest passes before lunch and be off exposed ridges by early afternoon. Fall colors in the aspens peak around mid to late September and are worth planning a trip around.

Laws

Colorado motorcycle laws: helmets and lane filtering

Helmets. Colorado requires helmets for some riders, mainly younger riders; the age and conditions are set in state law. See the IIHS helmet law overview for the current rule. Whatever the law says for you, wear one.

Lane filtering. Since 2024 Colorado allows lane filtering, riding between stopped vehicles, under conditions set in state law. It is not lane splitting at speed in moving traffic. Know the conditions before you do it, and expect some drivers not to know the law yet.

This is a plain-language summary, not legal advice. Laws change, so check the Colorado statute or the state DMV before you ride.

Events

Colorado motorcycle events and the riding calendar

Colorado's big draw is the roads themselves. Many Colorado riders head north each August for the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in South Dakota; check the organizer for dates. The Distinguished Gentleman's Ride runs in cities worldwide in May.

Most weeks, the riding calendar is bike nights, meets, charity rides and toy runs. Rippin' puts them on one events map covering the whole US, so you can find what's near you and RSVP. Riders can post their own meets, and shops and clubs can host recurring meets and official events with Organizer Pro. See motorcycle events in Rippin'.

Rippin' in Colorado

The free motorcycle app for Colorado riders

Rippin' is free on iPhone and Android. Tap Record Ride once and pocket the phone. It tracks route, miles, moving time, elevation and speed, and ends with a Ride Wrapped recap.

Turf. Close a loop and the land inside becomes your turf on the live map. A Peak to Peak and Big Thompson loop out of the Front Range is a natural first claim, and most of Colorado is unclaimed today. Empty land is free to claim. See Turf Wars.

Poker stops, roads and squads. Riders collect poker cards at real stops, and Colorado shops and cafes can join through partners. Riders can add a road and the Rippin' team checks it before it goes live. Keep your crew together with squads and plan the pass day with the AI ride planner.

Honest note: Rippin' started in Southern California, and Colorado has few riders and roads in the app so far. Rippin' has no offline maps, so carry a backup for the San Juans.
