Riding Utah
Utah motorcycle rides: red rock, high passes and canyon roads
The best Utah motorcycle rides split into two worlds: red rock highways in the south like Utah 12 and Utah 24, and cool Wasatch canyons like the Alpine Loop and the Mirror Lake Highway. Ride the desert in spring and fall and the mountains in summer. Here are the roads, seasons, laws and events.

Why ride Utah
Why Utah motorcycle rides are worth the trip
Few states pack this much variety into one tank range. In a day you can leave a cool Wasatch canyon and end the night under red cliffs, mostly on quiet, well-paved two-lanes once you leave I-15.
The Wasatch Front (Ogden, Salt Lake City, Provo) is where most Utah riders live. Its canyons are the after-work rides, from American Fork and Provo Canyon to Logan Canyon up north. They stay cool when the valley bakes.
Southern Utah is the postcard: Zion, Bryce, Capitol Reef, Arches and Monument Valley, with small towns far apart. The northeast (Vernal, Flaming Gorge) is quieter, with long climbs over the Uintas.
Best roads
The best motorcycle roads in Utah
These are well-known, paved rider favorites. Park roads charge entry fees and some use timed reservations in busy seasons, so check the park before you go.
- Scenic Byway 12 (UT 12)US 89 near Panguitch past Bryce Canyon through Escalante and Boulder to Torrey. Slickrock, canyons and forest in one ride. Watch the Hogback between Escalante and Boulder, a narrow ridge with steep drops and no shoulder.
- Capitol Reef Country (UT 24)Torrey through Capitol Reef National Park to Hanksville, past the Fruita orchards. Pairs with UT 12 for a loop. Watch for blown sand near Hanksville.
- Bicentennial Highway (UT 95)Hanksville to Blanding, crossing the Colorado River at Hite. Empty and sweeping. There's almost no fuel between the two towns, so fill up first.
- US 163 to Monument ValleyFrom Bluff through Mexican Hat to the Arizona line and the classic Monument Valley view. Watch for tourists stopped for photos. Nearby UT 261's Moki Dugway is gravel switchbacks, so skip it unless you're comfortable on dirt.
- Colorado River Scenic Byway (UT 128)Moab up the Colorado River past the Fisher Towers toward I-70. Canyon walls and river bends. Watch for cyclists and raft traffic near Moab.
- Zion to Mount Carmel Highway (UT 9)Through Zion National Park with switchbacks, the long tunnel and east-side slickrock. The main canyon drive is shuttle-only much of the year, but UT 9 stays open. Take sunglasses off for the dark tunnel.
- Mirror Lake Scenic Byway (UT 150)Kamas over Bald Mountain Pass, above 10,000 feet, toward Evanston, Wyoming. Lakes, pines and cool air in July. It closes in winter and snow lingers near the top into early summer. Check Forest Service fees if you plan to stop.
- Alpine Loop Scenic Byway (UT 92)American Fork Canyon over the top to Sundance and Provo Canyon. Tight, narrow hairpins with no center line, so watch for cars cutting corners. Closed in winter, with a fee booth in American Fork Canyon.
- Logan Canyon (US 89)Logan up the canyon and down to Bear Lake at Garden City. Flowing curves along the Logan River. Watch for deer at dusk and summer lake traffic.
- Flaming Gorge Uintas Scenic Byway (US 191)Vernal north over the eastern Uintas to Flaming Gorge, with signs marking the rock layers as you climb. Watch for deer and elk, and cold air up top even in summer.
When to ride
When is motorcycle season in Utah?
Southern Utah (St. George, Zion, Moab) rides best in spring and fall. Low desert summers are very hot, so ride early. St. George winters are often mild enough for midday rides; Moab and the plateaus get cold nights and some snow.
Mountain roads run on a short calendar. Passes like the Mirror Lake Highway, the Alpine Loop and the Nebo Loop close for winter and typically open in late spring, depending on snow. Bryce and the high parts of UT 12 sit between roughly 7,000 and 9,000 feet or more and can see snow in May and October.
Summer storms build many afternoons in July and August. Flash floods can run across dips in desert roads. If water is crossing the road, wait it out.
Laws
Utah motorcycle laws: helmets and lane filtering
Helmets. Utah requires helmets for some riders, mainly younger riders; the age and conditions are set in state law. See the IIHS helmet law overview for the current rule. Whatever the law says for you, wear one.
Lane filtering. Since 2019 Utah allows lane filtering, riding between stopped vehicles, under conditions set in state law. It is not California-style lane splitting at speed. Learn the conditions before you try it.
This is a plain-language summary, not legal advice. Laws change, so check the Utah statute or the state DMV before you ride.
Events
Utah motorcycle events and the riding calendar
Speed Week at the Bonneville Salt Flats near Wendover is the famous one: land speed racing on a closed salt course, usually in August, motorcycles included. Some years it's canceled when the salt is too wet, so check the organizer for dates. That's the place for speed. Public roads aren't.
The Distinguished Gentleman's Ride happens in cities worldwide in May for men's health charities. Check the organizer for a Utah ride.
Most weeks, the riding calendar is bike nights, meets, charity rides and toy runs. Rippin' puts them on one events map covering the whole US, so you can find what's near you and RSVP. Riders can post their own meets, and shops and clubs can host recurring meets and official events with Organizer Pro. See motorcycle events in Rippin'.

Utah riding tips

- Respect the heatLow desert summers are brutal. Ride at dawn and carry water.
- Deer, elk and open rangeDeer and elk come out at dawn and dusk, and much of southern Utah is open range with cattle on the road.
- Sand and gravel in cornersSlickrock country blows sand onto the road, and canyon roads collect gravel after storms. Look through every blind corner before you commit.
- Altitude and coldDesert to 10,000 feet can take an hour. Pack a warm layer even in July.
Rippin' in Utah
The free motorcycle app for Utah riders
Rippin' is free on iPhone and Android. Tap Record Ride once, pocket the phone and ride. You get route, miles, moving time, elevation and speed, then a Ride Wrapped recap.
Turf. Close a loop and the land inside becomes your turf on the live map. The Utah 12 and Utah 24 loop is exactly that kind of ride, and most of Utah is unclaimed. Empty land is free to claim. Read how Turf Wars works.
Poker stops and roads. Riders collect a card at each poker stop, no QR codes, and Utah cafes and shops can become stops through partners. A rider can add a road and the Rippin' team checks it, then it gets a board and a crown in segments.
Group rides. Put your crew on one live map during a group ride.
To be straight: Rippin' started in Southern California, and Utah has few riders and roads in the app so far. There are no offline maps, so carry a backup for the empty stretches down south.
