Riding Maryland

Maryland motorcycle rides from the mountains to the bay

Maryland motorcycle rides pack mountains, farm country and the Chesapeake into one small state. Ride the Historic National Road and Deep Creek Lake in the west, Catoctin Mountain and the Civil War battlefields in the middle, and the waterfront towns of the Eastern Shore. This page covers the roads, the seasons, the helmet and lane splitting rules, events, and riding Maryland with the free Rippin' app.

Why ride Maryland

Why Maryland motorcycle rides punch above the state's size

Maryland is small, but the riding changes fast from west to east. The panhandle in the west is real mountain country, with Garrett County's high plateau, Deep Creek Lake and long ridges cut by the Potomac. Head east and you drop into the Hagerstown Valley and over Catoctin Mountain above Frederick, then into the rolling Piedmont farm country north and west of Baltimore.

East of the cities, the land flattens into Chesapeake country. The Eastern Shore across the Bay Bridge is farm fields, marshes and waterfront towns like St. Michaels and Chestertown, and Southern Maryland runs down a long peninsula to Point Lookout. These aren't twisty rides, but they are quiet and pretty and full of good places to stop.

The middle of the state is dense. Traffic around Baltimore and the Washington suburbs is heavy most of the day, so most good Maryland rides start with getting outside the beltways as early as you can.

When to ride

When to ride in Maryland

Spring and fall are best. April through June and mid-September through October bring mild days. Fall color usually reaches Garrett County first, then works east across the state through October.

Summer is hot and humid in the central and eastern parts of the state, with afternoon storms. Western Maryland stays noticeably cooler, which makes Deep Creek Lake a classic summer escape. Beach traffic on the Bay Bridge and US 50 peaks on summer weekends.

Winter splits the state. Garrett County is one of the snowiest places in the Mid-Atlantic, so the western season is shorter. Around Baltimore and on the Eastern Shore there are rideable dry days in winter, but salt and freezing mornings come with them. Hurricane season runs June through November, and storms can flood low roads along the bay.

The rules

Maryland helmet and lane splitting laws

Helmets. Maryland requires a helmet for all riders. See the IIHS helmet law overview for the current rule.

Lane splitting and filtering. As of 2026, Maryland law doesn't allow lane splitting or filtering. Several states are changing their laws, so check before you ride.

This is a summary, not legal advice. Laws change, so check the Maryland statute or the Maryland MVA before you ride.

Riding calendar

Maryland motorcycle events and bike nights

Maryland's riding calendar is built on bike nights, dealer events, charity rides and toy runs, and the shore towns see plenty of riders in late summer and fall. For the big national rallies, Maryland riders head to Laconia Motorcycle Week (New Hampshire, June), Americade (New York, June), the Myrtle Beach bike rallies (South Carolina, May) or Daytona Bike Week (Florida, March). The Distinguished Gentleman's Ride runs in cities around the world each May. Check each organizer for dates.

The Rippin' events map covers the whole US, with hundreds of bike nights, meets, rallies and charity rides. RSVP in the app, follow repeating weekly and monthly meets, and post your own. Shops and clubs can list theirs too. More on motorcycle events in Rippin'.

Riding tips for Maryland

Rippin' in Maryland

How the free Rippin' app works in Maryland

Rippin' started in Southern California, and Maryland is early, with few riders and roads in the app so far. Most of the turf map is open, and every part of the game is free.

Turf. Close a loop and the land inside becomes your turf on the live map. A Saturday loop around Catoctin Mountain, or out to Deep Creek and back, makes a strong first claim. Turf claimed with your squad counts for the crew. How Turf Wars works.

Poker stops. Crab shacks, cafes, shops and dealerships can become a poker stop. Ride up and the stop deals you a card, no QR codes. More on poker runs.

Roads. Add a favorite road with Create a Segment, and a person on the Rippin' team checks it before it goes live with your name on it. Read how roads get added.

Squads and group rides. Start a squad, plan the ride, and see everyone on one live map with group rides, which helps a lot on a Bay Bridge run when the group gets split.
