Riding Nevada
Nevada motorcycle rides, from Red Rock to Lake Tahoe
Nevada motorcycle rides mean red sandstone outside Las Vegas, alpine passes above Lake Tahoe, and some of the emptiest two-lanes in the country in between. This guide covers the best roads, when to ride each end of the state, Nevada's helmet and lane splitting rules, the big rallies, and how the free Rippin' app works here.

Why ride it
Why Nevada motorcycle rides are bigger than the Strip
Nevada rides like two states joined by a few hundred miles of open basin and range. Southern Nevada is Las Vegas and the Mojave: red rock canyons, Lake Mead and the Spring Mountains, all a short ride from the city. Northern Nevada is Reno, Carson City and Lake Tahoe on the edge of the Sierra, with pine forest, alpine passes and the old mining town of Virginia City.
In between is the part most people only fly over. Long, straight highways cross one valley, climb over a mountain range and drop into the next valley, again and again. US 50, US 6, US 95 and SR 375 can go an hour or more without a town. For riders who like distance and silence, that's the draw. Northeast Nevada adds the Ruby Mountains near Elko, and the far east has Great Basin National Park.
The two ends of the state have opposite seasons, so there's good weather somewhere most of the year. The catch is heat in the south, cold up high and fuel in the middle.
The roads
The best motorcycle roads in Nevada
Ten roads, from the Las Vegas area to the Sierra and the far eastern ranges.
- Red Rock Canyon Scenic DriveA 13-mile one-way loop through Red Rock Canyon west of Las Vegas, past red and cream sandstone cliffs. Watch for the timed-entry reservation required in the busy season, plenty of cyclists, and slow traffic at the overlooks.
- Valley of Fire HighwayRuns through Valley of Fire State Park northeast of Las Vegas, with bright red sandstone on both sides and a scenic spur road deeper into the park. Watch for summer heat, the park entry fee and cars stopping for photos.
- Kyle Canyon Road (SR 157)Climbs from US 95 up Mount Charleston into the Spring Mountains, where it can be far cooler than Las Vegas. Link it with Deer Creek Road (SR 158) and Lee Canyon Road (SR 156) for a mountain loop. Watch for snow in winter and weekend crowds.
- US 50, the Loneliest Road in AmericaCrosses central Nevada from Fallon to Ely through Austin and Eureka, climbing over pass after pass between empty valleys. Watch the fuel gauge: gaps between towns are long, so fill up every chance you get.
- Extraterrestrial Highway (SR 375)Runs through the high desert past the tiny town of Rachel, near the edge of the Nevada Test and Training Range. Watch for open range cattle, no services outside Rachel and no cell signal for long stretches.
- Mount Rose Highway (SR 431)Climbs from Reno over a summit close to 9,000 feet and drops to Incline Village with Lake Tahoe below. Watch for snow and shaded ice well into spring, and dress for cold at the top.
- Lake Tahoe's Nevada shore (SR 28 and US 50)Follows the east shore past Sand Harbor and down toward Stateline, with blue water through the pines. Watch for heavy summer traffic, pedestrians at the beaches and full parking lots.
- Geiger Grade (SR 341)Climbs from south Reno up to Virginia City, the old Comstock mining town, with steep switchbacks and views over the valley. Watch for wind, wild horses near the road and tourist traffic in town.
- Lamoille Canyon RoadRuns into a glacier-carved canyon in the Ruby Mountains southeast of Elko, a short out-and-back with peaks on every side. Watch for wildlife, snow at the upper end outside summer, and slow sightseers.
- Wheeler Peak Scenic DriveClimbs to about 10,000 feet in Great Basin National Park near Baker, through aspen and pine. Watch for the steep grade, cold at the top and the upper section's winter closure.
When to ride
When to ride Nevada
- Southern NevadaOctober through April is prime. Summer heat in Las Vegas regularly passes 110 degrees, which is dangerous on a bike, so summer rides happen at dawn or up on Mount Charleston. Summer thunderstorms can flood washes and roads fast.
- Reno and Lake TahoeLate spring through fall. Winter brings snow and chain controls to Mount Rose and the Tahoe passes. Even in summer, mornings at altitude are cold.
- Central and eastern NevadaSpring and fall are best. Summer is hot in the valleys and cool on the passes, and wind can be strong any time of year. Great Basin's high road is a summer ride.
The rules
Nevada motorcycle laws: helmets and lane splitting
Helmets. Nevada requires a helmet for all riders. The IIHS helmet law overview shows how that compares with other states.
Lane splitting and filtering. As of 2026, Nevada law doesn't allow lane splitting or filtering. Several states are changing their laws, so check before you ride. If you ride in from California, remember to stop splitting at the state line.
This is a summary, not legal advice. Laws change, so check the Nevada Revised Statutes or the Nevada DMV before you ride.
Events
Nevada motorcycle events and rallies
Nevada hosts two of the West's best known rallies. The Laughlin River Run fills the river town of Laughlin in spring, and Street Vibrations takes over Reno in the fall. Both draw riders from across the West. The Distinguished Gentleman's Ride, a worldwide charity ride usually held in May, rides in cities around the world too. Check the organizer for dates every year.
Between the rallies, the calendar is bike nights, club rides and charity runs around Las Vegas and Reno. In Rippin', open Meets to find them and RSVP, and repeating weekly or monthly meets show their next date. Riders can post their own meets, and shops and clubs can list events so riders nearby see them. See how motorcycle events work in Rippin'.

Riding tips for Nevada
- Heat is the real hazardIn summer, ride early, drink before you're thirsty and consider a cooling vest. Dehydration sneaks up on you at highway speed in dry air.
- Fill up when you canOn US 50, US 6 and SR 375, the next gas can be well over an hour away. Know your range and don't pass a station on a long day.
- Open range and wild horsesCattle wander onto rural highways, and wild horses graze near the roads around Reno and Virginia City. Dusk is the worst time.
- CrosswindsWind funnels through the valleys and gusts hard past ridges and trucks. Stay loose on the bars.
- Altitude means coldMount Rose, Great Basin and the central passes can be much colder than the valley floor. Pack a layer even in summer.
Rippin' in Nevada
How the Rippin' motorcycle app works in Nevada
Honest answer: Rippin' started in Southern California, and Nevada is early. There are few riders and few rider-added roads here so far, which means the turf around Las Vegas, Henderson, Reno and Carson City is mostly unclaimed. Everything below is free on iPhone and Android.
Ride a loop that closes back on itself, like a run out to Red Rock and back, and the land inside becomes your turf on the live map. Empty land is free to claim, and anyone who wants it later has to ride a tighter loop through it to carve a piece out. Read how Turf Wars works.
Moto shops, cafes, bars and dealerships can become poker stops that deal a card to every rider who shows up. Read about poker runs, or put your business on the map. Know a road that deserves a board? Add it as a segment for a person on our team to check. Start a squad for your crew.
