Texas seasons

The best time to ride a motorcycle in Texas

The best time to ride a motorcycle in Texas is spring, March through May, and fall, October and November, when the Hill Country is green or gold and the heat backs off. Texas is big enough to have different seasons in different corners, though: Big Bend rides best in winter, the Davis Mountains and the Panhandle in early summer, and South Texas almost all year.

The short version

Texas has more than one riding season

Most of Texas rides best in spring and fall, and plenty of Texans ride all year. Winter in Central and South Texas is mostly mild, broken up by fast cold fronts and the occasional ice storm. Summer is the real off-season for much of the state. You can ride, but 100-degree afternoons in traffic wear a rider down fast.

Elevation and distance change the answer. The Big Bend desert is a different climate from the humid Gulf Coast, and the Panhandle around Amarillo, at about 3,600 feet, gets a real winter. So plan by region. The table below shows how each part of the state rides through the year, the best motorcycle roads in Texas covers where to go, and the Texas motorcycle rides overview has the rest.

Hill Country

Hill Country: spring and fall, with storms in between

Spring is why riders come to the Hill Country. Bluebonnets and other wildflowers usually show up in late March and peak in early to mid April, lining the ranch roads around Fredericksburg, Llano and the Willow City Loop. Temperatures are comfortable and the rivers are running. The tradeoff is traffic on wildflower weekends and strong spring storms.

Central Texas is known as Flash Flood Alley for a reason. Thin soil and steep limestone send rain into the creeks fast, and many ranch roads cross those creeks at grade. A low-water crossing that was dry at breakfast can be deadly by lunch. If water covers the road, turn back. Heavy rain is most common in late spring and again in fall.

Fall is the second prime season. October cools off, and from late October into November the bigtooth maples at Lost Maples State Natural Area near Vanderpool turn red and orange, right on the Twisted Sisters route. Deer are especially active in fall, so slow down at dawn and dusk.

Big Bend and West Texas

Big Bend and West Texas: ride it in the cool months

Big Bend is a winter destination. From October to April, days in the low desert along the Rio Grande are mild and clear, which is when FM 170 and the Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive ride best. Nights get cold, sometimes below freezing, and the Chisos and Davis Mountains can see a little snow, so pack layers. Spring break in March and the winter holidays are the busiest times in the national park, so book lodging early.

From May through September the desert floor near the river is regularly over 100 degrees. If you're out west in summer, ride high: Fort Davis and the Davis Mountains Scenic Loop sit around 5,000 feet and run noticeably cooler, and the Chisos Basin is the cool spot inside the park. Summer afternoon thunderstorms can flood dry washes and dips in the road with little warning.

Distances are long in every season. Fuel up whenever you can, carry water even in winter, and expect Border Patrol checkpoints on highways heading north from the border.

Everywhere else

The Panhandle, East Texas and the Gulf Coast

The Panhandle gets a real winter, with snow, ice and hard wind from December into March. Spring is windy and stormy, with hail and tornado risk peaking in May and June. September and October are the sweet spot for Palo Duro Canyon and TX 207, and early summer works too, since the high plains run a little cooler than the rest of the state.

East Texas is green, humid and shaded by pine forest. Spring and fall are best. Summer is hot and sticky, and winter is mild but often wet.

The Gulf Coast and South Texas ride well from October to May. Winter is mild enough for a beach run most weeks, which is why the Rio Grande Valley draws winter visitors. Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, with the most activity usually in August and September, so watch the forecast before a late summer coast trip. November is also when the Lone Star Rally fills Galveston; see Texas motorcycle events.
