Why ride Texas
Why Texas is worth riding
Texas is big enough to ride like several states. Much of it is straight interstate and flat ranch land, but the Hill Country is cut by rivers into ridges and canyons, and the ranch roads that climb in and out of them are as good as anything in the South.
The Hill Country runs west from Austin and San Antonio toward Kerrville, Fredericksburg, Bandera and Leakey. The famous curves are here, a day ride from both cities.
West Texas is the other half. Around Alpine, Fort Davis, Marfa and Big Bend the land opens into desert mountains; plan it as a trip, not a day. The Panhandle adds canyon country near Amarillo, East Texas has the Piney Woods, and the Gulf Coast runs from Corpus Christi to Galveston.
Roads
The best motorcycle roads in Texas
Most of these are two-lane ranch roads with no shoulder, so leave room for a deer or a patch of gravel around every bend.
- Twisted Sisters (RR 335, RR 336, RR 337)Three ranch roads that link Leakey, Camp Wood and Vanderpool into a loop of roughly a hundred miles of climbs, switchbacks and river crossings. It is the best known motorcycle ride in Texas. Watch for loose gravel in corners, livestock and long stretches with no fuel.
- River Road (FM 170)Runs along the Rio Grande from Lajitas to Presidio through Big Bend Ranch State Park, with canyon walls, river views and a very steep climb and drop known as the Big Hill. Carry water and fill up first; services are few and summer heat is extreme.
- Ross Maxwell Scenic DriveA paved road of about 30 miles inside Big Bend National Park, from the Chisos foothills down to Santa Elena Canyon. The park charges an entrance fee. Watch for wildlife at dawn and dusk and for heat in the lower desert.
- Davis Mountains Scenic Loop (TX 118, TX 166)A loop of about 75 miles from Fort Davis through the Davis Mountains, past the McDonald Observatory and through high ranch country. Cooler than the desert below. Watch for deer and open range cattle, and note there is no fuel on most of the loop.
- Devil's Backbone (RR 32)Runs along a limestone ridge between the Wimberley area and US 281 north of Canyon Lake, with views off both sides. Short, close to Austin and San Antonio, and busy on weekends. Watch for blind crests and slow traffic.
- Willow City LoopA narrow loop of about 13 miles off TX 16 north of Fredericksburg, through private ranch land. Famous for spring wildflowers, which also bring heavy traffic. Watch for cattle guards and livestock, and stay on the road; the land on both sides is private.
- TX 16 (Kerrville to Bandera)Climbs and drops through the hills between Kerrville, Medina and Bandera, a classic Hill Country connector. Watch for deer near dusk and weekend traffic around Bandera.
- TX 207 (Claude to Silverton)Crosses the Panhandle and drops into the canyon breaks near Palo Duro and Tule canyons, a surprise after hours of flat plains. Watch for strong crosswinds on the high plains and for cattle on the road.
Seasons
When to ride in Texas
Spring (March to May) is the best time for most of the state. The Hill Country turns green, wildflowers line the ranch roads in March and April, and temperatures are comfortable. Spring also brings strong thunderstorms, hail and flash floods, so check radar before a long day.
Summer (June to September) is hot nearly everywhere, with many days over 100 degrees. Ride early, carry water and skip the low desert around Big Bend in midsummer. Gulf hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30.
Fall (October and November) is the second prime season and the best time for West Texas and Big Bend. Winter is mild in South Texas and the Rio Grande Valley, so you can ride most of the year there, while the Panhandle gets wind, ice and snow.
Laws
Texas motorcycle laws: helmets and lane splitting
Texas requires helmets for some riders, mainly younger riders; the age and conditions are set in state law. The IIHS helmet law overview keeps a current table by state. Whatever the law says for your age, wear a helmet. A full-face lid with a clear visor also keeps out the bugs, hail and road grit that come with riding here.
As of 2026, Texas law doesn't allow lane splitting or filtering. Several states are changing their laws, so check before you ride. Until that changes, stay in your lane, hold a lane position where drivers can see you in their mirrors, and leave room to move at lights.
This is a short summary, not legal advice. Laws change, so check the current Texas statute or the state DMV before you ride.
Events
Texas motorcycle events and rallies
The big one is the Lone Star Rally in Galveston, usually in November, which fills the island with bikes, vendors and music. Check the organizer for dates.
The Distinguished Gentleman's Ride happens worldwide every May, with rides in many cities. Check its site for one near you in Texas.

Tips
Texas riding tips
- Deer in the Hill CountryWhite-tailed deer are everywhere west of Austin and San Antonio, and they move most at dawn and dusk. Slow down in those hours, cover the brakes and expect a second deer behind the first.
- Low-water crossingsHill Country roads cross creeks at grade, and they flood fast in a storm. If water is over the road, turn around. Even dry crossings can hold gravel, mud or algae.
- Fuel and distance out westIn West Texas the gaps between gas stations can be long. Fill up whenever you can around Big Bend and Marfa, and don't count on cell coverage.
- Toll roadsMany toll roads around Dallas, Houston, Austin and San Antonio are cashless, and bills go by mail to the plate's owner. Use a toll tag or plan routes around them.
- Border Patrol checkpointsHighways heading north out of the Big Bend region and other border areas have Border Patrol checkpoints. Expect to stop and answer a question or two.
Rippin' in Texas
Using Rippin' as your Texas motorcycle app
Rippin' is a free motorcycle app for iPhone and Android. The ride tracker records in the background, and every ride pays points.
Turf Wars fits Texas well. Ride a loop that closes back on itself and the land inside becomes your turf on the live map. Most of the Texas map is still unclaimed, so a Hill Country loop like the Twisted Sisters can wrap a big piece of ground on the first try. Read how Turf Wars works.
Honest note: Rippin' started in Southern California, and most of Texas has few riders and roads in the app so far. Add your favorite stretch as a segment and a person on the Rippin' team checks it before it goes live (how roads get added). Shops and cafes can become poker stops through partners, and crews can keep chat, plans and turf together in squads.
