Tucson and Southern Arizona
The Tucson motorcycle app for Mt Lemmon and beyond
Rippin' is a free Tucson motorcycle app for riding Mt Lemmon, Gates Pass, Kitt Peak and the roads of Southern Arizona. It records every ride, turns loops into turf on a live map, deals poker cards at real stops and keeps your squad and meets in one place. Tucson's turf map is wide open today, and none of the classic Tucson motorcycle rides are in the app yet, so the first riders to add them put their names on them.

Where it stands
Rippin' as a Tucson motorcycle app today
Straight answer: Rippin' has a handful of riders in Arizona and none of the Tucson classics are in the app yet. The only approved Arizona road so far is Tortilla Flat, up near Phoenix. Tucson's turf is unclaimed.
For a new rider on the app, that's the best possible start. Ride a loop through town and it's very likely new turf. Add Mt Lemmon, Gates Pass or Kitt Peak and your name stays on it. Post a bike night and it's the one riders see. Everything in the game is free.
Tucson motorcycle rides
Tucson motorcycle rides worth knowing
The full guide, with a map and what to watch for, is the Tucson and Southern Arizona ride guide. For the rest of the state, see the best motorcycle roads in Arizona.
- Mt Lemmon (Catalina Highway)The headline Tucson ride. From the northeast edge of town up to Summerhaven, around 8,000 feet, from saguaros to pines. Often 20 degrees or more cooler on top. Watch for cyclists, enforcement and rock, and check AZ511 for fire and snow closures.
- Gates Pass and Kinney RoadOver the Tucson Mountains west of town, then Kinney Road past Saguaro National Park West. Short, close to town, and a famous sunset view. Tight corners and sightseers.
- Kitt Peak (SR 386)West on SR 86, then a long climb up SR 386 to the observatory at around 6,800 feet. Big desert views. On Tohono O'odham Nation land, so ride respectfully.
- Madera CanyonFrom Green Valley into the Santa Rita Mountains. An out-and-back climb to cooler air and shade. Weekend crowds at the top.
- Sonoita and PatagoniaSR 83 south through grassland to Sonoita, then SR 82 to Patagonia. Wine country and open range, a relaxed day loop.
- Tombstone and BisbeeEast to the old mining towns, through the Mule Pass Tunnel into Bisbee on SR 80. A full day of history and gentle curves.

Three Tucson loops to start your map
If you're new to Rippin' in Tucson, these three rides cover a lot of ground and set up your first turf and roads.
Plan any of these with the loop builder, then ride it with turn-by-turn inside Rippin' or hand it to Apple Maps or Google Maps. The Ride Wrapped recap at the end shows the map, miles, turf and points.
- 1
Dawn on the mountain
Leave at first light, ride the Catalina Highway up to Summerhaven, and have breakfast in the pines. Ride it with Rippin' recording, then add it with Create a Segment if nobody has yet. Check AZ511 first.
- 2
The west side loop
Out Speedway, over Gates Pass, along Kinney Road past Saguaro National Park West, and back into town another way. Short, close to home, and it closes a loop for turf.
- 3
Wine country day
SR 83 down to Sonoita, SR 82 over to Patagonia, and back up through Nogales or the way you came. Plenty of passport stamps and room to relax. Fuel up before you leave town.
Turf Wars
Claiming turf in Tucson
Tucson sits in a bowl with mountains on every side, which makes it a natural turf town. A loop out Speedway, over Gates Pass, along Kinney Road and back closes around a big piece of the west side. A loop around the Catalina foothills can claim the north.
Empty land is free to claim. Once it's yours, other riders have to ride a tighter loop through it to carve a piece away, and you can spend points to lock your best ground so it can't be touched. Squad turf counts for the crew. Read how Turf Wars works and see it on the live map.

- SquadsStart a Tucson squad, send the invite code, and keep chat, plans and turf in one place. See squads.
- Group ridesEveryone in the group on one live map on the way up the mountain. Live location is only shared when you start a group ride or broadcast.
- Meets and bike nightsFind Tucson meets and RSVP, or post your own and make it repeat weekly. See Arizona motorcycle events.
Shops and cafes
For Tucson shops, cafes and dealerships
Moto shops, cafes, bars and dealerships can become poker stops, so every rider who arrives gets a card. In a market this early, the first stops on the map get found first. Start on the partners page. Riders who want to get Tucson going can read about the ambassador program.
A cafe in Summerhaven, a shop near the foot of the mountain, a diner in Sonoita or a bar in Bisbee all sit where Tucson riders already stop. As poker stops, they turn a regular day ride into a hand of cards, and squads can string them into their own runs. Riders can also nominate a stop they love.
Seasons
Riding Tucson through the year
Tucson rides well from October through April. Summer is hot, but Mt Lemmon is right there, so Tucson riders have one of the easiest heat escapes in the state: ride up at dawn, have breakfast in the pines, and come down before the valley floor heats up.
Monsoon storms build most afternoons from mid-June through September, with lightning, flash floods in the washes and sudden wind. Plan to be home early. Our guide to riding a motorcycle in Arizona heat covers it, and the best time to ride in Arizona has the month by month view.
Southern Arizona is big and empty between towns. Fuel up before Kitt Peak, Sonoita or the run to Bisbee, and carry water. Rippin' sends weather alerts before you ride and riders flag hazards on the map.
