Riding Delaware
Delaware motorcycle rides: the Brandywine, the bayshore and the beaches
Delaware motorcycle rides are short and varied: rolling, wooded roads through the Brandywine Valley north of Wilmington, the quiet Bayshore Byway along the marshes, and the Coastal Highway past Rehoboth and Bethany. Here are the best roads, when to ride, the helmet and lane splitting rules, events, and how to ride Delaware with the free Rippin' app.

Why ride Delaware
Why Delaware motorcycle rides are better than you'd think
Delaware is the second smallest state, and most of it is flat. That doesn't make it dull. The very top of the state, in northern New Castle County, is Piedmont country: hills, creeks, stone walls and old estates in the Brandywine Valley. It is the closest thing to twisties you'll find here, and it is only minutes from Wilmington.
South of the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal, the state opens into farmland, marsh and small towns. Kent and Sussex counties are farm and poultry country, with Delaware Bay on one side and the Atlantic beaches in the southeast corner. Dover sits in the middle.
Because the state is so compact, Delaware rides often cross the line. Wilmington riders head into Pennsylvania's Chester County, and beach riders roll into Maryland's Eastern Shore or take the ferry to Cape May, New Jersey. Treat Delaware as the hub of a bigger loop and it gets a lot more interesting.
The roads
The best motorcycle roads in Delaware
Delaware's best roads are in the far north and along the water. These eight cover both.
- Kennett Pike (DE 52)Runs northwest from Wilmington toward the Pennsylvania line through the Brandywine Valley, past estates and gardens. Part of the Brandywine Valley Scenic Byway. Smooth and rolling, with turning traffic at estate entrances and village centers.
- Montchanin Road (DE 100)The other half of the Brandywine Valley Scenic Byway, running north through Montchanin toward Brandywine Creek State Park. Narrower and more wooded than DE 52. Watch for cyclists and tight bridges.
- Red Clay Valley Scenic BywayA set of narrow roads along Red Clay Creek west of Wilmington, near Yorklyn and the Pennsylvania line. Wooded and twisty by Delaware standards. Low bridges and blind corners keep the pace slow.
- Delaware's Bayshore Byway (DE 9)Runs south from New Castle through Delaware City and Leipsic, past Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge and the bay marshes. Flat, quiet and open. Crosswinds off the bay and slow farm equipment are the main things to watch.
- Coastal Highway (DE 1)Runs along the Atlantic past Rehoboth Beach and Dewey Beach, across Delaware Seashore State Park and the Indian River Inlet Bridge, to Bethany Beach and Fenwick Island. Ocean on one side and the bay on the other. Expect heavy summer traffic, wind and blowing sand.
- US 9 between Georgetown and LewesA rural two-lane across Sussex County farm country, connecting the county seat to the coast. Easy and quiet off-season. Watch for poultry trucks and farm equipment.
- Cape May-Lewes FerryNot a road, but a classic way to end a Delaware ride. The ferry crosses Delaware Bay from Lewes to Cape May, New Jersey, and carries motorcycles. Reserve ahead in summer and tie down the bike the way the crew tells you.
- Woodland Ferry and the western Sussex back roadsNear Seaford, the small Woodland Ferry crosses the Nanticoke River, and the farm roads around it make a slow, quiet loop. Check that the ferry is running before you plan around it.
When to ride
When to ride in Delaware
Delaware's best riding months are May, June, September and October. Spring brings mild temperatures, and early fall is the sweet spot at the beaches, when the water is still warm and the summer crowds are gone. Fall color in the Brandywine Valley usually peaks in October.
July and August are hot and humid with afternoon storms, and the Coastal Highway turns into a crawl on summer weekends. If you want the beach in summer, go early on a weekday.
Winters are milder than in the states to the north, and dry winter days are rideable, but road salt, cold wind off the water and the occasional nor'easter come with them. Hurricane season runs June through November, and coastal storms can flood DE 1 and the bayshore roads.
The rules
Delaware helmet and lane splitting laws
Helmets. Delaware requires helmets for some riders, mainly younger riders; the age and conditions are set in state law. See the IIHS helmet law overview for the current rule. Even where it's optional, wear one. Bay crosswinds and beach traffic make for surprises.
Lane splitting and filtering. As of 2026, Delaware law doesn't allow lane splitting or filtering. Several states are changing their laws, so check before you ride.
This is a summary, not legal advice. Laws change, so check the Delaware statute or the Delaware DMV before you ride.
Riding calendar
Delaware motorcycle events and bike nights
Delaware has no national rally of its own, but it has plenty of local riding: bike nights, dealer events, charity rides and toy runs around Wilmington, Dover and the beach towns. Delaware riders are also close to a lot of the East Coast calendar. The Myrtle Beach bike rallies (South Carolina, May), Americade (New York, June) and Laconia Motorcycle Week (New Hampshire, June) are all road-trip distance, and the Distinguished Gentleman's Ride runs in cities worldwide each May. Check each organizer for dates.
The Rippin' events map covers the whole US, with hundreds of bike nights, meets, rallies and charity rides. RSVP in the app, follow repeating meets, and post your own. Shops and clubs can list events too. See motorcycle events in Rippin'.

- TollsI-95 near Newark and parts of DE 1 are tolled, and the Delaware Memorial Bridge charges a toll heading into Delaware. Know how you'll pay.

Rippin' in Delaware
How the free Rippin' app works in Delaware
Rippin' started in Southern California, and Delaware is early, with very few riders and roads in the app so far. In a state this small, that is a real opportunity: one good loop can put a big piece of the Delaware map under your name, and every part of the game is free.
Turf. Close a loop and the land inside becomes your turf on the live map. A loop through the Brandywine Valley, or down the coast and back through Sussex farm country, makes an easy first claim. How Turf Wars works.
Explore and poker stops. The Explore map puts turf, segments, poker stops and meets on one map. Beach bars, cafes and shops can become a poker stop, and each stop deals a card when you arrive. More on poker runs.
Roads. Add the Brandywine roads or a favorite bayshore stretch with Create a Segment, and a person on the Rippin' team checks it before it goes live with your name on it. Read how roads get added.
Squads. Start a squad, plan the ferry run, and keep chat and turf in one place.
