Why ride Michigan
Why ride Michigan: water on three sides
Michigan is two states in one. The Lower Peninsula, the mitten, holds Detroit and Grand Rapids, farmland in the south and forest up north. The Upper Peninsula, the UP, is a different world: few people, long distances, Lake Superior along the north edge and Lake Michigan along the south. The Mackinac Bridge on I-75 joins them, and riding across it is a rite of passage.
There are no mountain passes here. The riding is about the shoreline and the woods. Northwest Lower Michigan has M-22, Sleeping Bear Dunes, the Old Mission Peninsula and Traverse City. The tip of the mitten has the Tunnel of Trees, Harbor Springs and Mackinaw City. Northeast Lower Michigan has the Au Sable River and the Lake Huron shore. And the UP has US 2, M-28, Pictured Rocks and the Keweenaw Peninsula at the far end.
Most riders do the north as a trip. Detroit to the Mackinac Bridge is a solid half day on the interstate.
The roads
Best motorcycle roads in Michigan
Michigan's well-known rides. Most are about scenery more than curves.
- M-22 (Leelanau Peninsula)Runs from Manistee north along Lake Michigan, past Sleeping Bear Dunes, around the Leelanau Peninsula and into Traverse City. Watch for summer traffic around Glen Arbor and cars stopping at pullouts.
- Tunnel of Trees (M-119)Runs north from Harbor Springs to Cross Village along the bluffs above Lake Michigan, under a canopy of hardwoods. Narrow, no center line. Watch for oncoming cars cutting corners and wet leaves in fall.
- Old Mission Peninsula (M-37)Heads north from Traverse City up the middle of the peninsula to the Mission Point Lighthouse, with bay views on both sides. Watch for winery traffic.
- River Road Scenic BywayFollows the Au Sable River west from Oscoda through the Huron National Forest, past the Lumberman's Monument and river overlooks. Watch for deer.
- US 2 along Lake MichiganHeads west from St. Ignace along the north shore of Lake Michigan, with long stretches of beach and dunes right beside the road. Watch for RV traffic and sand on the shoulder.
- M-28 and the Seney StretchCrosses the UP east to west, including the famously straight stretch between Seney and Shingleton, then runs along Lake Superior near Munising and Marquette. Watch fuel, deer and the odd moose.
- H-58 to Pictured RocksRuns from Munising to Grand Marais along Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, through forest with curves and short climbs. Watch for park traffic and tight corners in the trees.
- Keweenaw Peninsula (US 41 and Brockway Mountain Drive)US 41 ends at Copper Harbor at the tip of the Keweenaw, and Brockway Mountain Drive climbs the ridge above town with views over Lake Superior. Watch for narrow pavement on Brockway, and weather that can turn cold any month up here.
- Mackinac Bridge (I-75)A ride every Michigan rider does once. The five-mile toll span joins the peninsulas, and the inner lanes are open steel grating. Watch the wind, which can bring restrictions.
Road conditions, closures and construction change every season. Check before you ride.
When to ride
When to ride in Michigan
Southern Lower Michigan has a riding season from about April to October. The farther north you go, the shorter it gets. In the UP, and especially the Keweenaw, which gets some of the heaviest snow in the Midwest, snow can linger into May and return in October. Plan UP trips for June through September.
Lake Superior stays cold all year, so a July ride along M-28 can be much cooler on the shore than inland, with fog in early summer.
- April and May: good in the south, cold and sandy up north.
- June to August: prime time for the UP and the northern shoreline roads. Expect crowds on M-22 and around Mackinaw City.
- Late September to mid October: fall color, starting in the UP and moving south. The Tunnel of Trees is a favorite then.
- November to March: most Michigan bikes are in the garage. Salt, ice and lake effect snow.
Laws
Michigan motorcycle laws: helmets and lane splitting
Michigan requires helmets for some riders, mainly younger riders; the age and conditions are set in state law. The IIHS helmet law overview has the details. Whatever the law says for you, wear one, ideally full-face.
As of 2026, Michigan law doesn't allow lane splitting or filtering. Several states are changing their laws, so check before you ride.
This is a plain-language summary, not legal advice. Laws change, so check the current Michigan statute or the state motor vehicle agency before you ride.
Events
Michigan motorcycle events and the riding calendar
Michigan's most famous cruise is the Woodward Dream Cruise in Metro Detroit, usually in August. It is a classic car event first, but plenty of riders show up along Woodward Avenue. Check the organizer for dates. Every May, Michigan cities also join the Distinguished Gentleman's Ride, the worldwide charity ride. Check the organizer for dates.
Beyond that, the calendar is bike nights, charity runs and fall color rides from shops around Detroit, Grand Rapids and Traverse City. They are on the Rippin' events map, which covers the whole US. RSVP in the app, or post your own meet. Here is what is coming up in Michigan right now.

Rippin' in Michigan
How the Rippin' motorcycle app works in Michigan
Rippin' started in Southern California, so Michigan is early days: few riders and roads in the app so far. That means the Turf Wars map is wide open. Close a loop around Traverse City or a UP lake and the land inside becomes your turf, with your name on it. Empty land is free to claim.
Michigan's roads also need riders to add them. Put a start and finish gate on M-119 or Brockway Mountain Drive with Create a Segment, someone on the Rippin' team checks it, and your name stays on it. Riders who ride through it land on its board. See how roads get added.
- Passport: every Michigan town you ride through earns a stamp. See passport and badges.
- Poker runs: shops, cafes and bars can become a poker stop, and squads can set up their own runs.
- Group rides: everyone on one live map for the bridge crossing. See group rides.
- Free: recording, turf, poker runs, segments, squads and events cost nothing.
