Why ride Nebraska
Why Nebraska is worth riding
Most people see Nebraska from I-80 along the Platte River and assume they've seen it all. The real riding is north and west of the interstate, where the land rolls into grass-covered dunes, pine ridges and sandstone bluffs, and you can ride an hour without meeting another vehicle.
The Sandhills cover much of north central Nebraska: grass-covered dunes, small lakes and ranches, crossed by a handful of long two-lane highways. The Pine Ridge in the northwest, around Chadron and Crawford, has buttes and ponderosa pine. The North Platte valley in the west follows the old Oregon Trail past Chimney Rock and Scotts Bluff.
Eastern Nebraska, around Omaha and Lincoln, is farm country and river bluffs along the Missouri. It's where most riders live and where the bike nights are, and it's the start of a lot of long weekend runs west.
Roads
The best motorcycle roads in Nebraska
Nebraska roads are about distance and scenery more than curves. Fill up at every chance and enjoy the space.
- Sandhills Journey Scenic Byway (NE 2)Runs about 272 miles from Grand Island to Alliance through the heart of the Sandhills, with grassy dunes, lakes and tiny ranch towns. Long coal trains often run beside the road. Watch for long fuel gaps and crosswinds.
- US 83 through the SandhillsCrosses the Sandhills north and south from North Platte through Thedford to Valentine, rolling over dunes with almost no traffic. Watch for cattle, deer and the long stretch between towns.
- Outlaw Trail Scenic Byway (NE 12)Heads east from Valentine along Nebraska's northern edge, through the Niobrara and Missouri river country with hills and river views. Watch for gravel at junctions and for deer near the rivers.
- Bridges to Buttes Byway (US 20)Follows US 20 across northern Nebraska from Valentine west through Chadron and Crawford, past Fort Robinson State Park and the Pine Ridge buttes. Watch for deer and wind on the open stretches.
- Gold Rush Byway (US 385)Runs north through the western panhandle through Bridgeport, Alliance and Chadron toward South Dakota, the old route to the Black Hills gold fields and a natural Sturgis approach. Watch for heavy bike traffic in August and long fuel gaps.
- Western Trails Scenic and Historic Byway (US 26 and NE 92)Follows the North Platte valley west from the Ogallala area and Lake McConaughy, Chimney Rock and Scotts Bluff, tracing the Oregon Trail. Watch for summer lake traffic and crosswinds in the valley.
- NE 71 through the Wildcat HillsClimbs south from Scottsbluff and Gering through the pine-covered Wildcat Hills toward Kimball, one of the few stretches in the state with real elevation and curves. Watch for deer and wildlife.
- Lincoln Highway (US 30)Follows the original coast-to-coast Lincoln Highway along the Platte valley across the state, through small towns parallel to I-80. A relaxed alternative to the interstate. Watch for railroad crossings and farm traffic.
Seasons
When to ride in Nebraska
Spring starts late. In March, sandhill cranes gather by the hundreds of thousands along the Platte River near Kearney, one of the great wildlife sights in North America, and worth a cold ride if the weather allows. April and May bring storms, hail and tornado risk.
Summer (June to August) is the main riding season. Days are hot and can be humid in the east, cooler and drier in the west. August brings a stream of riders heading north to Sturgis.
Fall (September and October) is excellent, with gold grass in the Sandhills and calmer weather, but harvest equipment fills two-lane roads. Winter brings snow, ice and blizzards, especially in the west, and most riders park the bike.
Laws
Nebraska motorcycle laws: helmets and lane splitting
Nebraska requires helmets for some riders, mainly younger riders; the age and conditions are set in state law. The IIHS helmet law overview keeps a current table by state. Whatever the law says for your age, wear a helmet. A full-face lid with a clear visor also keeps out the bugs, hail and road grit that come with riding here.
As of 2026, Nebraska law doesn't allow lane splitting or filtering. Several states are changing their laws, so check before you ride. Until that changes, stay in your lane, hold a lane position where drivers can see you in their mirrors, and leave room to move at lights.
This is a short summary, not legal advice. Laws change, so check the current Nebraska statute or the state DMV before you ride.
Events
Nebraska motorcycle events and rallies
Nebraska's biggest motorcycle event is really in South Dakota. The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally takes place every August in the Black Hills, and a lot of riders from the south and east cross Nebraska to get there, often on US 83, US 385 or US 20. The Distinguished Gentleman's Ride runs worldwide in May. Check each organizer for dates.
In Nebraska itself the calendar is bike nights, charity rides and poker runs, mostly around Omaha, Lincoln, Grand Island and Kearney. Rippin's events map covers the whole US, so you can find meets and RSVP from the app. Riders and shops can post their own events, and repeating meets stay on the calendar. Rippin' in Nebraska
Using Rippin' as your Nebraska motorcycle app
Rippin' is a free motorcycle app for iPhone and Android that rewards riding. The ride tracker records every mile in the background, and every ride pays points toward gear drops.
Nebraska's long loops make big turf. In Turf Wars, ride a loop that closes on itself and the land inside becomes yours on the live map. The Nebraska map is almost entirely open, so a Sandhills loop can claim a serious chunk of the state. Every town you pass through adds a passport stamp.
Straight talk: Rippin' started in Southern California, and Nebraska has few riders and roads in the app so far. Add your favorite byways as segments, and a person on the Rippin' team checks each one before it goes live (how roads get added). Cafes and shops can become poker stops through partners, and your crew can plan the Sturgis run together in squads.
